Staff nurse – Dermatology Outpatient clinic and Procedures, St Michaels Clinic, Shrewsbury; Donnington Medical Centre, Telford. Reports to: Lead Nurse. Responsible to: Dr D Veitch, Clinical Director.
Job Summary
To work as a skilled member of the nursing team, to provide a high standard of holistic, patient-centred care. To communicate effectively at all levels with the Multidisciplinary Team and establish good relationships with patients and carers. You will work within the clinics, providing predominantly dermatology services to NHS and private patients at St Michaels Clinic, Shrewsbury and Donnington Medical Centre in Telford. This post will involve assisting with skin surgery procedures and dermatology clinics. It will also involve seeing patients for suture removal and wound review. Training will be provided for all roles.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Provide high standards of nursing care.
* Ensure an ongoing welcoming, caring and safe environment for patients and their carers.
* Act as an advocate for patients and families, providing information and supporting them and directing them to relevant services where appropriate.
* Develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge to provide patient-centred care; ensure clinical practice is evidence-based on peer-reviewed best practice.
* Undertake expanded roles following appropriate training.
* Undertake nurse-led procedures, suture removal, wound reviews and dressing changes.
Outpatient Procedure and Clinic Nurse
Assist in minor surgery and procedures. Prepare patients for surgical procedures. Assist doctors (and skin surgery nurse practitioners) with procedures such as Dermatological and Oculoplastic surgery. Follow clinic policies on documentation of procedures and drugs/equipment used, correct documentation and labelling of specimens for pathology. Ensure patient fitness for discharge after procedures and provide appropriate post-procedure information, documented in patient notes.
Nurse-led procedures include suture removal, wound reviews, dressing changes, photo clinics, and UVB. The clinic nurse will prepare the patient and carry out the procedure once competent. Post-procedure, ensure the patient receives adequate after-care advice and is fit for discharge.
Outpatient Clinics
The nurse will demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. Provide written/verbal information and explanations of management decisions and treatments to patients and carers where applicable.
Nurse-led Drug Monitoring Outpatient Follows Up
Assess patients’ response to treatment and presence of any side effects. Ensure appropriate monitoring tests (e.g., blood tests, pregnancy tests) have been carried out at required times and results are satisfactory. Discuss concerns with the clinic doctor and request review where necessary. Issue further prescriptions from the Doctor when appropriate.
Patient Record Keeping
Ensure contemporaneous records of all patient contacts and treatments are documented in electronic records, maintaining confidentiality and complying with NMC standards for recording keeping.
Professional Development
Takes personal responsibility for professional development, lifelong learning, clinical supervision and appraisal. Engage with learning opportunities. Ensure duties are carried out to the highest standard and in accordance with clinic policies and procedures. Be a member of relevant national nursing forums. Participate in annual appraisal and mandatory training/education meetings.
Other
Travel between places of work is a requirement of this post.
General
* The post holder is responsible for adhering to the NMC Code of Conduct.
* Nursing staff are required to provide evidence of annual NMC registration to the practice manager.
* Enhanced CRB is a condition of employment.

Infection Prevention and Control
The post holder must comply with infection prevention and control policies and guidelines, maintain up-to-date knowledge, and participate in mandatory updates and ongoing CPD. Any breach may result in disciplinary action. All staff should challenge poor infection prevention and control practices and report breaches through appropriate clinic mechanisms.
