Responsibilities
- Take overall responsibility for safety and health compliance in the machine shop.
- Provide guidance and support to Machine Shop Team Leaders and team members, promoting good engineering standards, safe working practices, continuous improvement activities, effective use of resources and personal development.
- Lead discussions on new manufacturing requirements, establishing correct method of manufacture, tooling, fixture, cycle time and cost.
- Ensure set‑up documents and CNC programmes are used correctly by the shopfloor and provide feedback when changes are needed.
- Monitor the requirements of the Master Shipment Plan, schedule short‑age lists and support planning with expected completion dates.
- Meet daily with Machine Shop Team Leaders to monitor progress against the production plan and ensure timely, cost‑effective completion.
- Establish accurate cycle times and update the system accordingly.
- Prioritise the highest priority job and monitor daily machine hours, losses, efficiencies, labour and machine utilisation to improve OEE.
- Participate in Weekly Capacity Meetings, review capacity graphs for key resources and assess utilisation and performance.
- Monitor and report on machine shop performance based on machine utilisation and actual versus estimated job times.
- Provide monthly reports to the team and Senior Management.
- Manage machine shop spend on tooling and fixtures within budget, collaborating with Planning and Purchasing on make‑in or buy‑out decisions.
- Monitor Non‑Conformance Reports and Quality Hold Notes, implement corrective actions and support root‑cause analysis of the NCR system.
- Support the apprenticeship programme, training plans and schedules for practical development.
- Encourage 5S standards, recommend new machinery or equipment, prepare supporting documentation and submit Capex requests.
- Advise Sales and Engineering departments on manufacturing and technical issues.
- Perform performance management of immediate direct reports, hold Employee Review Meetings and review training needs and skill set of staff.
Qualifications & Expertise
- Experience managing a CNC machine shop for high‑strength grade materials with horizontal milling, turning, VMCs, spark, and wire‑cut processes.
- Considerable experience in all aspects of workshop practice.
- Experience in production management: materials management, inventory control, production control and purchasing management.
- Experience supervising and managing a large team of employees.
- Experience with advanced manufacturing tools and techniques to monitor and improve complexity.
