Applications are invited for a Consultant in Obstetrics with a specialist interest in Maternal Medicine at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a prime opportunity to join our large maternity unit, which has an average of 5,400 births per year.
About the role
We are looking for an obstetrician with a strong background in maternal medicine and high‑risk pregnancies. Candidates with additional expertise in obstetrics, gynaecology, teaching or leadership will also be considered.
The successful candidate will work with the maternal medicine team and the wider multidisciplinary team, contribute to the monthly Maternal Medicine MDT meetings, liaise with Leeds Teaching Hospital for ongoing care, and support departmental teaching, training and quality and safety meetings.
Our goal is to continue upskilling and improving subspecialist obstetric services. Experience and enthusiasm for enhancing the services are welcomed.
Main duties of the job
Focus on developing and maintaining maternal medicine and high‑risk obstetric services. This includes oversight of high‑risk maternity care and personalised care pathways for mothers with complex medical and social needs.
For clinicians wishing to take on a gynaecology component, appropriate clinic and theatre involvement can be incorporated into the job plan. Other areas of interest (ambulatory gynaecology, abortion care, colposcopy, menopause care, urogynaecology) may also be accommodated.
Key clinical services: 24‑hour maternity triage unit, labour ward, birth centre, high‑risk clinics (diabetes, haematology, perinatal mental health, small baby, multiple pregnancy, infectious diseases, epilepsy). Specialist gynaecological services: outpatient hysteroscopy, colposcopy, cystoscopy, early pregnancy assessment and termination service. All services are delivered at the main hospital, except an outpatient hysteroscopy clinic and bereavement follow‑up clinic at Westwood Park Community Hospital.
Job responsibilities
* Support and provide resilience to existing multidisciplinary maternal medicine clinics, obstetric haematology clinic, obstetric epilepsy clinic and diabetes in pregnancy care clinics.
* Attend a regular caesarean section list and a weekday antenatal ward round.
* Be the link obstetrician for one of the community midwifery teams.
* Participate in on‑call rota for obstetrics and possibly acute gynaecology, covering 24 h/7 days.
* Contribute to the monthly maternal medicine MDT and departmental teaching, training, quality and safety meetings.
Person specification
Experience
* Completion of an approved period of training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
* Clinical training and experience in maternal medicine.
* Specialist training in maternal medicine (ATSM/SITM route or equivalent).
* Experience in high‑risk pregnancy care and enhanced antenatal care for women with previous pregnancy loss and stillbirth.
* Experience teaching and leadership is desirable.
Qualifications
* MBChB or equivalent.
* MRCP or FRCS of equivalent to specialty (UK) or equivalent.
* Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (UK) or equivalent.
* CTT/CCT or within 6 months of AAC date.
* On Specialist Register with GMC and maintain a licence to practice.
