We are seeking an experienced full-time Consultant Psychiatrist who will work at Cygnet Joyce Parker Hospital and provide senior medical cover on our 12 bed PICU inpatient service for men.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician and will oversee and maintain the care of all ward inpatients as required and will also have responsibility for auditing the medical services rendered at the ward and ensuring their good quality in accordance to GMC standards of good medical practice and other relevant professional guidelines.

In this role, your expertise will be the driving force for life-changing treatment fully supported by a Specialty Doctor and first-class multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologist and occupational therapist.

You’ll also have the opportunity to progress to Medical Director Level through our management schemes.


Main duties of the job

Cygnet Joyce Parker Hospital is our emergency mental health hospital in Coventry.The service supports adults across three wards to move as quickly and safely as possible to the most appropriate and least restrictive environment for them.

The ethos of the service is about assessing and treating individuals in the least restrictive environment and planning for discharge in a robust and timely fashion. With a focus on stabilisation, we support individuals to manage their mental health, reinforce daily living skills and prepare for independent life back in the community.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician on our Male PICU ward and have overall medical responsibility of patient treatment plans, whilst liaising closely with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Registered Mental Health Nurses, Social Workers etc.)

The post holder will be expected to act as a positive role model, maintaining and demonstrating a positive attitude towards patients, their families, visitors and other staff.

We are seeking an experiencedfull-time Consultant Psychiatristwho will work atCygnet Joyce Parker Hospitaland provide senior medical cover onBlythe Ward,our 12 bed Male PICU service due to open in January 2026.

This is part of an expansion of the service. There is already an existing fully functioning PICU (Beck ward) on site which is currently covered by another Consultant Psychiatrist who is also the Medical Director. All PICU consultants are part of the Cygnet PICU peer group who meet weekly for peer support and discussion of complex cases.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician and will oversee and maintain the care of all ward inpatients as required and will also have responsibility for auditing the medical services rendered at the ward and ensuring their good quality in accordance to GMC standards of good medical practice and other relevant professional guidelines.

Blythe Wardis a 12 bed male PICU which accepts emergency and crisis admissions. Referrals come to us from all areas, including directly from community, from acute, other PICUs and prison services.

Our aim is a short, rapid intervention to help individuals regain a sense of control and order in their lives, so they can move to a less restrictive care setting and ultimately return home.

The service provides expert, intensive, short-term, individualised care for men detained under the Mental Health Act. Service users will present with increased risks that require them to be assessed and treated in a PICU environment.

Main duties and Responsibilities

Lead on the provision of high quality care to the service users admitted toBlythe Ward

Act as a positive role model, maintaining and demonstrating a positive attitude towards patients, their families, visitors and other staff.

Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team

Assess referrals & undertake mental state examinations of service users

Undertake appropriate investigations, diagnosis & treatment

Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews & clinical audits

Lead the implementation of risk assessment, risk management & embed clinical governance with in the service

Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals & managers hearings & attend hearings

Liaise with the Ministry of Justice for transfer of patients and approval of leave as required

Good maintenance of patient records

To ensure and maintain regular communications with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager

To communicate effectively through regular contact with patients, relatives, staff, directors, and any other concerned bodies; maintaining appropriate reports.

Attend and contribute to academic meetings and adhere to the professional standards for CPD as set out by the GMC, the Department of Health and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

We are looking for someone who is...

Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified

Registered on the Specialist Register (CCT/CESR), Section 12 and AC Status in Adult or Forensic Psychiatry. Prior experience in inpatient acute, PICU or secure settings are desirable.

Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, along with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity

A first-rate communicator who can interview, assess & treat patients & write clear, comprehensive medical notes

Committed to continued professional development

Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team

A member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent
