We are currently working with a growing, dynamic SME specialising in civil and structural engineering solutions, with a strong reputation for delivering high-quality infrastructure projects across the UK. As they expand our bridges and highways capability, we’re looking for a Principal Bridge Engineer to lead technical delivery, mentor junior engineers, and contribute strategically to the business.
The Role
As Principal Bridge Engineer, you will take ownership of bridge design and assessment projects from concept to completion. You’ll provide technical leadership across a range of transport infrastructure projects, liaising directly with clients, managing project teams, and ensuring our high standards of delivery are met. This is a hands-on design and leadership role, ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced SME environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and manage bridge engineering projects (new design, assessment, inspection, rehabilitation).
* Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers and technicians.
* Act as a key point of contact for clients, contractors, and stakeholders.
* Prepare and review detailed technical reports, drawings, and specifications.
* Ensure designs comply with current standards (DMRB, Eurocodes, etc.) and safety in design principles.
* Support business development, including preparing bids and contributing to strategic growth.
* Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated design solutions.
Requirements
* Chartered Engineer (CEng MICE or MIStructE).
* 10+ years of experience in bridge design, assessment, and project delivery.
* Strong working knowledge of UK design codes and standards.
* Experience managing multidisciplinary teams and liaising with external stakeholders.
* Proficient in structural analysis software (e.g., LUSAS, MIDAS, SuperSTRESS) and BIM workflows.
* Excellent communication and leadership skills.
* Passionate about quality and innovation, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
