Data Platform Services (DPS) is part of the HMRC Chief Data Office within the Chief Digital and Information Officer group (CDIO). This function designs, builds and operates the data foundations for all of HMRC's services at a size and scale larger than most other organisations.

DPS is leading a major transformation programme encompassing technology, capabilities and data services whilst continuing to deliver high quality and robust services to our internal and external customers. DPS is growing to ensure it can provide the Intelligent Client function that HMRC requires for the future.


Job description


There is an exciting opportunity to join a growing and fast paced delivery team within HMRC's Data Platform Service Delivery Group as a Data Engineer.

The Data Platform Services Group is building an engineering capability to help run, maintain, and evolve its strategic Data platforms and Products.

The Data Engineer will take part in delivering, supporting and maintaining the Delivery Group's technical products and platforms. Technology areas include Data Streaming, ETL, Data Lakes, Data Warehousing, Data Virtualisation, Business Intelligence, advanced analytics and scalable data platforms that support AI Applications, Machine learning and large language models.

A strong technical foundation, an enthusiasm for technology and innovation, a proactive approach to work, an aptitude to learn and real teamwork ethos are key aspects we're looking for in candidates.

The Team:

DPS' operating model is based on delivering Platforms and Products organised around a number of data capabilities grouped into Platform Orientated delivery units (PODs)such as data acquisition, search and Operational Risking.

This model allows POD team members to develop data products tailored to a capability type and service whilst growing specialist knowledge and skills. It brings together teams that can collaborate and share professional and technical skills within a specific data identity.

Person specification


As part of the Engineering team, you will have a key part to play in the build and run of the Delivery Group's strategic Data Analytics Products, Platforms and Services. Ensuring HMRC has a strong Intelligent Client Presence.

Participate in agile project delivery.

Build new strategic Products and the configuration of IT Platforms and Products for new business Services.

Help build and administer key components of our data platforms, including monitoring, alerting, capacity management, investigation and resolution of technical issues.

Support a range of data exploitation Products and Platforms.

Implement preventative and corrective maintenance activities on Platforms and Products.

Provide monitoring and support for complex critical 24x7 services.

This role may require the successful candidate to provide support outside of normal working hours in an On Call Rota.

Use a wide range of collaboration tools such as Confluence and JIRA.

Support the integration of AI/ML solutions with existing HMRC IT systems and external data sources.

Stay up to date with latest emerging technologies in the AI sector.

Some travel may also be required as part of this role to work in a geographically distributed Delivery Group as well as engage with customers and suppliers.

Essential Criteria:

* Database Management Systems and Data Warehousing.
* Demonstrable experience participating in projects/programmes using Agile methodology.
* Relational and/or Dimensional Data Modelling.
* Programming concepts and coding in Python and/or Java.
* Awareness and understanding of ETL tools (e.g.Talend, Pentaho Data Integrator, SAP Data Services, Informatica powercentre).
* Awareness and understanding of Data Visualisation, its application and tools, e.g. Power BI, Tableau, Qlik.
* Experience with SQL, HQL or GQL queries.
* DataOps including CI/CD Deployment and Configuration (e.g. Teraform, Artifactory, Gitlab, Jenkins).
* Machine learning Engineering – Building and deploying AI models at scale using frameworks.
* Graph Database and AI – knowledge of graph databases such as Ne04j/Neptune.
