Job overview

This exciting new role will be a great opportunity for an experienced Midwife or Neonatal Nurse be part of a multi-disciplinary team that looks at transitional care of the new born and the ATAIN project. This role will focus on ensuring that the transitional care units are BAPM and MIS compliant, and to lead on the ATAIN reviews and any learning that comes from this. This role will involve quality improvement, data analysis, education, networking and unit management. As part of this exciting role you will also act as the lead for the new Transitional Care Unit that is on the footprint of the brand new NICU on the Luton and Dunstable site.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

·Work to ensure a high standard of care is provided in the new born transitional care units across the trust

·Lead on the transitional care and ATAIN projects trust wide ensuring that BAPM and MIS standards are met

·Work as part of the wider MDT to ensure that babies are cared for in the appropriate environment to reduce parental separation as much as possible and promote family integrated care.

·Participate in local, regional, national and international transitional care forums

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

·Lead on the implementations of guidelines and policies in relation to transitional care and the ATAIN project

·Explore more efficient and effective ways of providing a high standard of family centred care and utilisation of resources.

·In conjunction with the MDT develop a mechanism for setting goals and benchmarking standards of care. Develop tools to improve the quality of the service and co-ordinate clinical services across the ward/dept.

·Support systems for sharing good practice within the ward/dept and trust wide.

·Pilot clinical programmes.

·Where necessary work clinically to support unit activity and to promote learning and best practice.

Education responsibilities

·Guide and support staff in their professional development and clinical competence.

·Through a process of continual assessment, identify development opportunities for staff, and in collaboration with service colleagues, develop programmes to facilitate the identified opportunities, through working in the clinical area with individuals.

·Guide and support staff in the monitoring and assessment for all learners in the clinical area.

·Reviewing and managing the performance of all staff by identifying their educational and other needs, annual IPR and objectives.

·Ensuring the orientation of staff and preceptorship in in-service training.

·Disseminate any learning from ATAIN reviews ensuring that the appropriate persons/teams are involved and if appropriate action plans are formulated and undertaken.

Management Responsibilities

·Act as ward manager for the designated transitional care areas

·Working with the senior teams for maternity and neonatal to ensure that all staff line management responsibilities are undertaken appropriately

·Liaise with the MDT to ensure that seamless transition of care between transitional care, neonatal and maternity services.

·Act as link with regional and national bodies in regards to transitional care and ATAIN.

1. Be responsible for in conjunction with the senior teams, the implementation and monitoring of clinical quality indicators in relation to the transitional care units. This will include but not exhaustive CQC outcomes Infection control – no avoidable infection strategy Quality and accuracy of documentation Improving the patient experience HSIB reviews SI, RCA and Complaint investigation

Audit and Project Management

·Lead on the undertaking of audits in relation to ATAIN and Transitional Care.

·Analyse audit data and implement any actions required

·Chair ATAIN review meetings and work with the governance and QI admin teams to ensure accurate minutes.

·Work with the maternity and neonatal governance teams to ensure that transitional care and ATAIN reviews are undertaken in compliance with MIS safety actions.

·Act as the lead for the MIS mandated improvement project in relation to ATAIN.

·Prepare reports and feedback at trust, LMNS, regional and national meetings in relation to transitional care and ATAIN.

Qualifications

8. RN or RM
9. Degree or equivalent
10. Post registration study or experience equivilant
11. Extensive experience in either Special Care or Post Natal Care of the new born
12. Shift management experience
13. Experience in participating in clinical audits
14. Experience of safeguarding children managements and processes
15. Awareness of clinical audits and research
16. Knowledge of current development in the NHS. i.e. 5 year delivery plan, GIRFT, NCCR and so on
17. In depth knowledge of Maternity Incentive Scheme safety action 3, NHS England ATAIN document and BAPM TC standards

Desirable criteria

18. Master’s degree in health care or research
19. Project management qualification
20. Neonatal Qualified in Speciality
21. Participated in quality improvement projects
22. Experience of audit and data analysis
23. Previous experience of project management
24. Experience in neonatal intensive care
25. Experience of ward/unit management
26. Participation in Neonatal Interest Groups.
27. Knowledge of ongoing regional and national QI projects for TC and ATAIN
