Job Summary
Assist in the provision of quality planned care for patients during their post and peri‑operative phase across a range of local anaesthetic surgical specialties. Provide professional nursing support to the Dermatology service within the limits of training and assessed competencies. Deliver the highest standard of patient‑centred nursing care and support doctors and the healthcare team.
About Us
Cumbria Medical Services provides NHS specialist services in Community Dermatology, Minor Surgery and Ophthalmology. We operate as a GPwER service across multiple locations, using community hospitals and GP surgeries in Cumbria. Founded by Dr Martin White and Dr Fayyaz Chaudhri, we have expanded steadily, adding Dr Ross Kelly to lead the community ophthalmology service in 2016. Our waiting times are low and we maintain excellent clinical outcomes with minimal infection rates.
Job Responsibilities
* Assemble, check and prepare surgical equipment, instruments and consumables for a wide range of operative procedures.
* Monitor patients and assist in the safe transfer and positioning throughout the procedure.
* Act as advanced scrub practitioner / first assistant to the surgeon, following defined policy.
* After training, perform suturing, small biopsies and curettes using local anaesthetic.
* Assist clinicians during minor operations and maintain aseptic field.
* Record accurate patient data in the clinical computer system and ensure timely dispatch of samples.
* Ensure the cleaning and safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps.
* Respect patient dignity, privacy and beliefs, and liaise with relevant clinicians on care matters.
* Contribute to quality improvement, audits, and training as required.
* For ophthalmology duties, check incoming referrals, arrange appointments, assess vision, and manage eye drops before hand‑over.
Qualifications
* Essential: Good general education.
* Desirable: Relevant NVQ3 or equivalent; phlebotomy; ECG and BP monitoring; basic first aid; basic life support certificate; safeguarding.
Experience
* Essential: Experience within a health‑care setting.
* Desirable: Relevant primary care or NHS experience; theatre experience or assisting with minor operations; ability to maintain a sterile field; experience with eye patients and equipment; working knowledge of EMIS.

Person Specification
* Essential: Able to travel and work across CMS sites in Cumbria.
Additional Information
Salary depends on experience at Band 5 or Band 6. This is a permanent, part‑time role. Pay scheme and working pattern details available on request.
