Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join the friendly team of Virologists at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a replacement post and is a permanent appointment. If appointed, you would join the existing team of two Consultant Medical Virologists and one Consultant Clinical Scientist in Virology. We are an established and supportive department which provides clinical Virology services to seven hospital sites in Liverpool.

Applications are invited for a full-time substantive (10PA) Consultant Clinical Virologist or Consultant Clinical Scientist post in Infection and Immunity within the Virology Department at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories (LCL). Expected on-call frequency is 1 in 4 (one week in four) including weekends via remote working. The post would be suitable for medical applicants with CCT in Clinical Virology or Infectious Diseases (or both), or for Consultant Clinical Scientists with FRCPath in Virology by examination.


Main duties

Provision and development of clinical Virology services across sites served by LCL, including Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, Liverpool Women’s Hospital, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Liverpool and The Walton Centre. Duties include provision of a telephone advisory service, authorisation of reports and laboratory liaison from the hub laboratory located on the Royal Liverpool site.

This appointment will provide opportunities for leadership in sub-specialties including transplant, oncology, ophthalmology, neurology, sexual health, paediatrics and neonatal care, and infectious diseases, which includes support for the regional High Consequence Infectious Disease unit. Other commitments can be organised by agreement of the Clinical Director of Infection and Immunity.

Job responsibilities

The position is an NHS Consultant in Virology. The post holder will be located in the Directorate of Infection and Immunity, based within the Liverpool Clinical Laboratories hub at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital site.

The appointee will participate in the consultant day and on-call rotas dealing with Virology service matters, support test stewardship, and authorisation of results as required. They will provide sub-specialty leadership, including guidance and policy review, complex case review, attendance at MDTs and Clinical Consults, as appropriate.

They will work closely with colleagues to provide a high quality, accredited and responsive Virology service to all users, encompassing clinical, diagnostic, epidemiological and scientific aspects. Development of research, audit and participation in regional, national and international working groups and committees will be encouraged as appropriate.

Responsibilities for diagnostic Virology services, clinical advice and liaison, infection prevention control, supervision of trainees and departmental administration are a corporate responsibility with all consultants sharing cover across these areas. Specific areas of responsibility may be assigned and reviewed on appointment.


Person Specification

Qualifications

* Full and Specialist registration (and with a license to practice) with the GMC or eligible for registration within six months of interview.
* CCT or within six months of award, or commensurate qualifications and experience for a Consultant Clinical Scientist of equivalent standing including a PhD and HCPC registration.
* Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in Virology by examination, or equivalent.
* Evidence of continuing medical education.

Desirable

* Relevant managerial qualifications or training.

Experience

* Clinical training and experience equivalent to UK CCT in Virology, or jointly in Virology/Infectious Disease.
* Ability to offer expert clinical and laboratory opinions on Virology in various settings including infection control.
* Experience in managing complex viral infections in high-risk patients (HIV, transplant and other immunodeficient patients).
* Experience in managing critically ill patients within a medical ICU/HDU environment.
* Experience in troubleshooting in diagnostic and clinical virology and in audit management.

Desirable experience

* Clinical or research commitment, attendance at teaching/training courses, supervision of postgrad clinical and laboratory research.
* Experience of FRCPath or equivalent and undergraduate Virology teaching.
* Peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals.
