Specialist Occupational Therapist, Stroke

UHCW is seeking motivated and committed Band 6 Occupational Therapists to join our dynamic Acute Stroke Therapy Team. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to high-quality stroke care across our hyper-acute and acute wards while developing specialist clinical skills in a fast-paced, supportive environment.


About the Team

Our multidisciplinary team includes Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists who provide strong professional support, supervision, and opportunities for clinical progression. As a central part of the regional stroke pathway, UHCW plays a key role in the early stages of patient recovery, ensuring seamless transitions and holistic care.

To help you settle into your role, you will be supernumerary for your first two weeks, giving you protected time to:

* Meet the team and wider MDT
* Understand local processes and pathways
* Identify training needs
* Build confidence in your clinical environment

We welcome informal enquiries and are happy to offer tours of our facilities on request.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.


Main duties of the job

To provide the best care, we offer a 7 day service but don't worry, we know to be at your best you need downtime and time to recharge - but you should be prepared to work weekends on a rolling basis too.

* To manage a caseload of patients with varying diagnosis and / or complex needs, using evidence-based practice with client centred principles, to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions
* To develop enhanced clinical skills and knowledge in an area of interest linked with patient cohorts (e.g. cognition, specific clinical condition, prehabilitation / acute rehabilitation)
* Contribute to the maintenance and development of the Trust Occupational Therapy service.
* To support the learning and development of students and staff
* To participate in 7-day working patterns as required

Job responsibilities

* Be professional, legally responsible & accountable for all aspects of own work and activities, to manage clinical risk within own clinical caseload.
* Carry a clinical caseload of highly complex patients, provide advanced therapeutic assessment & evaluation, and provide detailed written treatment plans with patient centered goals working within ward / department areas.
* Work as an autonomous practitioner and member of the multidisciplinary team, contributing to team discussions and influencing decisions about patient care programs, taking on the role of care coordinator and/ or vocational lead where relevant.
* Carry out treatment, using a broad variety of modalities and clinical reasoning to allow selection of the most appropriate technique evaluating, modifying, and recording all interventions and outcomes & adapting them to meet the needs of the patient.
* Use highly developed manual treatment skills requiring coordination, sensation & dexterity.
* Work in accordance with RCOT & HCPC rules of professional conduct and within local care pathways, policies and standards.
* Establish and maintain effective communication networks with patients, carers, MDT, other workers and agencies across health, social care and the private sector locally and regionally.
* Contribute to the Trust and Group clinical governance arrangements and quality agenda, including the setting and monitoring of practice standards, clinical risks, CAE & Health & Safety.
* Take the lead for information management within area of responsibility to ensure high quality up to date written and electronic (where available) records and activity data are maintained in accordance with Professional and Trust standards & produce in a timely manner.
