Opportunity to Join Welfare Rights, Debt Advice and Fairer Charging Service
We are seeking to appoint two full-time Welfare Rights Officers to provide specialist welfare rights advice, including appeal representation for Salford residents. The roles involve working in partnership with local organizations and collaborating across the health and care system to reduce health inequalities.
The Welfare Rights, Debt Advice, and Fairer Charging Service is a well-established team within the Adult Social Care and Health Partnerships Directorate. Annually, the service provides welfare rights and debt advice to over 4,000 Salford citizens and secured over £11 million for residents in 2024/25 through advice and representation.
Salford City Council is committed to supporting residents facing financial hardship. In response to ongoing Cost of Living pressures, the City Mayor and Cabinet have approved additional support initiatives, including a new benefit uptake program for pensioners delivered by this service.
The service offers a supportive environment with 1-to-1 managerial and peer support, emphasizing learning and development. We prioritize a person-centered approach, listening to client feedback to improve accessibility and outcomes. Some client comments include:
* “You have been very helpful and appreciate your help and that you've listened to me.”
* “Thanks so much for all your time and effort in helping me with this; it’s a massive weight off my shoulders and I can’t thank you enough!”
* “Thank you for everything you have done; you are so kind. I never thought I’d get help the way you have helped me & loads of others.”
* “Without your help, I would struggle. I have terrible anxiety and worry about forms like this. It’s a fantastic service, and I am so grateful.”
* “Yesterday I felt happier than I have in a long time. I could have cried because I’ve struggled quite a bit. This help means the world to me, so thanks.”
* “Thank you so much for the help and support during a devastating time. If not for you, I don’t think I would have gotten through that dark period.”
The service supports hybrid and flexible working, delivering advice via phone, email, community venues, and home visits where needed.
Please note that this position requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, costing £21.50, which will be deducted from your salary over four months. If employment does not commence, an invoice for this amount will be issued.
We will not consider candidates requiring sponsorship for this role.
