Position Overview
Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is expanding its Ophthalmology services and is seeking a Consultant to lead in Paediatric Ophthalmology, Adult Strabismus, Cataracts and Neuro‑Ophthalmology. This new role supports the growth of our department and enhances specialist care across our sites.
Key Responsibilities
The Consultant will deliver high‑quality secondary care, paediatric urgent care and strabismus services for both children and adults. Responsibilities include:
* Direct clinical care, including elective and acute surgery for all disease management levels.
* Providing support, training and supervision for junior medical staff (including non‑training grades), allied health professionals and ophthalmic nurses.
* Working with multidisciplinary teams – Orthoptists, Optometrists and Advanced Orthoptists – to deliver comprehensive paediatric and adult strabismus services.
* Participating in a full‑time role (10 Programmed Activities):
o 8.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) including patient‑related administration.
o 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).
* Collaborating with colleagues within the Trust to provide a comprehensive ophthalmic service to the Mid and South Essex population.
Qualifications and Expectations
The post-holder should have a subspecialty interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology, Adult Strabismus and Neuro‑ophthalmology. The role requires the ability to deliver on all degrees of disease management, including elective and acute surgery, and to provide support, training and supervision for junior medical staff and allied health professionals.
