Job summary

This key role is central to delivering high quality patient care withcompassion. The care you provide will make a real difference to patients andtheir carers and relatives.

We have our ownprofessional development team within the Emergency department which iscommitted to provide ongoing training throughout your career in the EmergencyDepartment.

Main duties of the job

Your role as a Health Care Assistant (HCA) is to work alongsideregistered nurse as part of the ward or department team to provide care topatients.

The types of duties include: washing and dressing patients, servingpatients meals, assisting with feeding patients when necessary, helping peopleto mobilise, assisting patients with toileting, bed-making, generally assistingwith patients' overall comfort, monitoring patients' conditions by takingtemperatures, pulse, respirations and weight.

Acting with compassion you will put patients at the centre of all youdo.

You will communicate effectively with patients and their carers.

This role will require you to work variable hours on a rota includingnights and weekends.

You will show courage by embracing new ways of working and doing theright thing by the people you care for, including speaking up when you haveconcerns.

You will assist with the cleaning and stocking within the EmergencyDepartment

Job responsibilities

You will assist with washing and dressing patients, using hoists asappropriate.

You will assist with serving meals and feeding patients, includingreporting on their intake and recording on charts as appropriate.

You will assist with toileting, escorting patients to and from thelavatory and recording outputs where necessary.

You will assist the qualified nurses with NEWS 2 vital sign monitoringand escalate appropriately.

You will undertake venepuncture, cannulation, blood glucose and ECGtraining to assist with the registered nurses.

You will work within the minor injuries unit and assist with minordressings, eye washouts and applying plaster of paris to fractures.

You will assist with patients mobilisation, ensuring safe environmentand using appropriate techniques.

You will make beds and help to ensure the ward/department is kept clean,tidy and safe.

You will communicate with patients and their relatives with care andcompassion.

You will help to ensure that patients are kept comfortable and receivepersonalised care.

You will be involved in patient booking in / admission, introducingpatients to ward / department area as directed by registered nurse.

You will assist with the recording and safe keeping of patients propertyand valuables.

You will assist the multi professional team to prepare and supportpatients undergoing treatment and / or investigation maintaining privacy anddignity at all times.

You will safeguard vulnerable adults.

You will complete all mandatory training required for your role andcontinuously maintain your compliance at 95% or above.

You will report to the nurse in charge of the ward / department mattersof concern relating to patients and the ward / department environment.

You will undertake duties outside your working area (e.g. delivery andcollection) to assist in maintaining good communication.

You will ensure the privacy and dignity of patients is met at all times.

You will be adaptable and flexible to working in various areas of thedepartment or ward as required.
