Overview
Responsible for providing electrical and control design, performing integration and controls tasks to support customers. Attends site to support installation and commissioning, and completes assigned activities under the direction of the Engineering Manager.
Essential duties and responsibilities
1. Liaise with client and application specialists during the tender/bid stage on design and specifications of control equipment and ancillary electrical works.
2. Write control strategies and prepare supporting documentation as necessary to fully define project-specific programming requirements.
3. Monitor and advise on costs associated with electrical designs both at proposal stage and throughout the contract.
4. Manage and issue to relevant parties electrical documents including control philosophies, FDSs, load schedules, cable schedules and wiring schematics.
5. Provide miscellaneous technical support including field service to support plant commissioning, operator training and warranty commitments.
6. Troubleshoot customer integration and controls issues including network communications.
7. Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
8. Other duties may be assigned as required.
Local duties and responsibilities
1. Select process instruments.
2. Design instrument loops and hook-ups.
3. Production of single-line diagrams in sufficient detail to allow tender prices to be obtained.
4. Carry out site surveys.
5. Manage and coordinate delivery of electrical scope of works. May be asked to lead projects.
6. Check and approve control panel drawings from sub-contractors.
7. Produce load schedules and cable schedules.
8. Attend factory testing of MCCs.
9. On-site supervision of electrical sub-contractors.
10. On-site set-up and commissioning of electrical plant. Ability to set up, interrogate and commission control equipment and instrumentation (e.g., ultrasonic level controllers, HMIs, Magflow meters).
11. Produce all required test sheets, commissioning documents and schedules required for inclusion within O&M manuals.
Leadership / Supervisory responsibilities
May be expected to mentor and train junior engineers. May act as team lead over specific projects or products. May be required to manage electrical sub-contractors on site. SMSTS / CSSSC or equivalent in site management.
Education, training and experience
* HNC electrical/control engineering or equivalent.
* City & Guilds 2382.
* Knowledge of 18th edition of IEE wiring regulations.
Communication skills
* Ability to read, analyse, and interpret complex industry-related documents.
* Ability to respond effectively to technical enquiries and complaints.
* Ability to communicate at all levels with client, suppliers and other disciplines.
Independent judgment, decision making & problem solving
* Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to a range of practical problems.
* Ability to react quickly, professionally and safely to problems arising during site installation.
Other skills and abilities
* Computer skills: Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. AutoCAD skills would be an advantage but not essential.
* Mathematical skills: Ability to understand and apply mathematical concepts.
* Travel: Some national and international travel required to supplier/construction sites.
* Other: read and interpret process & instrumentation diagrams, mechanical & structural drawings and wiring schematics; previous field experience; ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines; experience in the water industry would be an advantage.
