* Plymouth Radiology Academy – the only purpose‑built Radiology Academy in the world.

Location: Fal Ward / Chemo Day Case Unit, Derriford Hospital, Derriford Road, Plymouth, PL6 8DH, Devon.

Contract type & working pattern: Permanent, 37.5 hours per week (Full time). Options include job share and flexible working.

Salary: £37,338 – £44,962 per annum (Pro‑rata if part‑time).

Grade: NHS AfC Band 6.

Job Overview

Fal Ward is a clinical day case unit looking for an experienced Oncology Nurse trained in chemotherapy. The role involves coordinating the day‑to‑day running of the unit, supporting senior sister’s managerial duties, and educating and leading junior staff. Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, NHS at‑risk staff throughout Devon and candidates with recent relevant experience.


Responsibilities

* Provide effective clinical and managerial leadership across oncology areas, including inpatients day case and outpatients, in the absence of the Clinical Nurse Manager.
* Establish systems for a multi‑disciplinary patient‑centred care delivery and demonstrate good interpersonal, teaching and practical skills.
* Provide patient and carer advice and support regarding health promotion, neutropenic sepsis, hair loss and other treatment side effects.
* Practice advanced specialist skills: administration of cytotoxic & immunotherapies, blood products, central venous and peripheral access device care, venepuncture and cannulation.
* Assess patients prior to treatment to determine whether alterations to planned care are needed and refer as appropriate.
* Assess supportive, palliative care and psychological needs and refer to appropriate professionals.
* In nurse‑led clinics, assess patients’ suitability for initial referral and treatment at each attendance (e.g., chemotherapy, immunotherapy).
* Collaborate with colleagues to ensure patients have access to timely, high‑quality information and actively deliver this information to patients, carers and staff.
* Plan, implement, carry out and evaluate care provided by self and other nursing staff.
* Maintain accurate clinical observations and records, interpret significance and implement appropriate care.
* Make decisions regarding clinical interventions based on complex clinical facts in crisis situations.
* Maintain clinical expertise by working at least 80% of the week clinically, undertaking training and keeping up to date with changes in practice.
* Act as a clinical resource, providing advice, support and supervision to unit staff and primary and secondary health care professionals regarding specialist patient management.
* Be visible and accessible to patients, visitors and users of the service, proactively promoting the role and responsibilities of the unit Senior Sister.


Person Specification – Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria:

* Delivery of SACT.
* Co‑ordination of the clinical and educational requirements defined by the Clinical Nurse Manager.

Desirable criteria:

* Experience managing complaints and undertaking conflict resolution.
* Ability to apply research findings and support evidence‑based practice.
* Experience of research processes.


Qualifications – Essential Criteria

* First‑level NMC registered Nurse Specialist with proven knowledge across SACT administration and CPD.
* UKONS passport and completed in‑house SACT training.


Qualifications – Desirable Criteria

* Leading clinical teams.
* Teaching, mentoring, assessing courses or qualifications.
* Degree‑level post‑registration qualification or equivalent in Oncology.


Aptitude & Abilities – Essential Criteria

* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Professional, pro‑active attitude with problem‑solving skills.
* Clinical leadership and self‑motivation.
* Ability to work on own initiative, prioritise workload and remain calm in a busy environment.
* Act as specialist nursing resource/practice educator or supervisor.
* Teamwork, patient advocacy and awareness of the emotional impact of working with cancer patients.
* Flexible and adaptable.
