About the role
Lead a small, high-performing team of civil/structural engineers delivering structural assessments across TfL railway assets, reporting to the Principal Engineering Leader. The position supports safety, reliability and compliance of bridges and structures and includes occasional night‑shift site inspections.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
* Lead and manage a team of 5–8 engineers, ensuring effective delivery of structural assessment work programmes.
* Undertake and oversee structural assessments of railway assets including bridges, subsurface tunnels, stations, buildings and ancillary structures.
* Ensure engineering outputs are safe, compliant and aligned with relevant standards, legislation and TfL assurance processes.
* Provide technical guidance and mentoring to team members, supporting their professional development.
* Review and assure calculations, reports and technical outputs for robustness, consistency and quality.
* Support asset risk management through assessment outcomes, contributing to maintenance, renewals and operational decision‑making.
* Offer practical engineering advice on structural capacity, defects, mitigation measures and operational impacts.
* Provide responsive technical support for urgent, time‑critical issues, including occasional site attendance during possessions or out‑of‑hours.
* Contribute to multidisciplinary projects such as structural modifications and third‑party works impacting railway structures.
* Engage effectively with stakeholders including project teams, asset engineers, suppliers and external parties.
* Promote continuous improvement through best practice, innovation and efficient delivery methods.
Role Requirements
You will be a Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer (CEng) or demonstrate equivalent experience and competence.
Key Skills and Experience Required
* Experience undertaking structural assessment of railway bridges, stations, buildings, covered ways and related infrastructure.
* Application of engineering judgement to assess asset condition, capacity, risk and required interventions.
* Knowledge of structural design, assessment, maintenance, repair and strengthening of civil engineering structures.
* Familiarity with relevant legislation, standards and safety, environmental and risk management principles.
* Technical assurance and quality control of engineering calculations, reports and designs.
* Supporting multidisciplinary engineering projects, including track and drainage renewal works and structural modifications.
* Managing or supervising engineering teams and developing early‑career engineers, graduates and apprentices.
* Planning, scoping and delivering structural surveys, inspections, testing and mitigation measures, and identifying technical solutions to engineering challenges.
* Building relationships and working collaboratively with stakeholders across engineering, operations and delivery teams.
