Adecco are recruiting on behalf of the London Borough of Newham for an experienced Assistant Director - Licensing and Regulation to provide strategic leadership across a key regulatory portfolio within the council's Environment and Sustainable Transport Directorate.
This is a senior leadership opportunity for an experienced regulatory professional to shape and deliver services that protect residents, businesses and visitors across the borough.
The Role
As Assistant Director - Licensing and Regulation, you will provide strategic leadership and operational accountability for a range of regulatory services. You will lead teams responsible for ensuring public safety, regulatory compliance and high-quality service delivery across Newham.
You will play a key role within the Departmental Management Team, working collaboratively with senior leaders, elected members and external partners to deliver the council's regulatory priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Provide leadership and operational oversight of Licensing and Regulatory Services.
Oversee services including Trading Standards, Licensing, Safety at Sports Grounds, Animal Welfare, and Safety Advisory Groups.
Manage and develop partnerships with key stakeholders including the GLA Primary Authority Contract and stadium safety partners.
Support the Assistant Director for Public Protection as required and deputise when necessary.
Contribute to the strategic direction of Community Safety and Regulatory Services as part of the Departmental Management Team.
Ensure services operate effectively, meet statutory obligations and deliver high standards for residents and businesses.
About You
We are looking for a senior leader with significant experience in regulatory services within the public sector.
You will demonstrate:
Extensive experience leading licensing or regulatory services within a local authority or similar environment.
Strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to manage large, complex teams.
Experience working at a strategic level, contributing to service transformation and organisational objectives.
Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively with elected members, partners and external agencies.
A strong understanding of the regulatory landscape including licensing, trading standards, public protection and safety compliance.
