Main duties of the job
We are recruiting two substantive Consultants to alternately fulfil a 50:50 split between the Paediatric Intensive Care Department at Leeds General Infirmary and the Embrace Transport Service, part of Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
Job responsibilities
* Deliver care to patients with critical illness: general medical, cardiac, and surgical patients.
* Manage patients on Extracorporeal Life Support and specialist surgical services including neurosurgery, liver transplant and renal transplant.
* Serve on programme activities (PA) – 5 at PCCU and 5 at Embrace, with associated on‑call duties (1 in 9 for PCCU).
* Lead and operate the Embrace transport service: clinical and managerial responsibility, equipment familiarisation, incident reporting, audit, and research.
* Support teaching, training and mentorship for medical and nursing staff.
* Collaborate with consultant colleagues across the Trust and regional transport services.
Person Specification
Training – Essential
* Completion of RCPCH Progress PICM Curriculum with two years training in a PICM ISAC‑approved centre, plus ≥6 months anaesthetics training.
* OR existing substantive consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine (including transport) in the NHS.
* OR equivalent training signed off at the time of application.
* Experience managing cardiac and post‑operative liver transplant patients and ventilated child transport.
* Valid Level 3 Safeguarding, BLS, APLS and NLS training.
Training – Desirable
* Experience with ECLS, neonatal and air transport, and caring for children on ECLS.
* Experience working at a consultant‑grade PICM and transport.
* Experience managing paediatric trauma patients and using POCUS.
Qualifications – Essential
* MB BS (or equivalent); MRCPCH, MRCP, FRCA or equivalent.
* On the GMC Specialist Register for Paediatric Intensive Care at the time of application.
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
Qualifications – Desirable
* Relevant higher degree in the speciality and subspecialty.
Experience – Essential
* High level of clinical experience and competence in PICU.
* Continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
Experience – Desirable
* Previous experience or interest in Paediatric Cardiac Intensive Care and ECMO.
Research, Teaching & Audit – Essential
* Ability to conduct medical research.
* Experience training undergraduate and postgraduate doctors; teaching in simulation.
* Participation in clinical audit and quality/safety reviews.
Research, Teaching & Audit – Desirable
* Supervising research by junior staff; publication in peer‑reviewed journals.
* Attendance at appraisal techniques or small‑group teaching workshops.
* Train the trainer course completion; willingness to undertake additional responsibilities.
* Experience in clinical or educational supervision; postgraduate certificate in education; complaint investigation and serious incident reviews.
Management, Interpersonal Skills & Other Criteria – Essential
* Understanding of current NHS issues.
* Well‑organised with sound time‑management skills.
* Effective interpersonal skills and team working.
* Full GMC Registration and entry to the Specialist Register via CCT, portfolio pathway, or international routes.
Management, Interpersonal Skills & Other Criteria – Desirable
* Attendance at a recognised management course.
