Locum Paediatric Consultant with special interest in PEM

The closing date is 31 March 2026

Applications are invited for a 1-year fixed-term Locum Consultant post in Paediatrics with a special interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) at Lister Hospital, East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. This is a hybrid role combining Paediatric Emergency Medicine and Acute General Paediatrics, suitable for an acute paediatrician with a strong interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate relevant experience in Paediatric Emergency Medicine and a clear commitment to PEM practice within an acute care setting. The post offers the opportunity to consolidate and further develop PEM skills alongside a substantive role in Acute General Paediatrics.

The post holder may also develop or continue an additional post-CCT special interest alongside their PEM and acute paediatric commitments, in line with service needs and departmental strengths.

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated paediatrician to join a friendly and supportive paediatric team. The successful applicant will undertake Paediatric Emergency Medicine shifts and Acute General Paediatric duties, including outpatient clinics, within an agreed job plan.

Main duties of the job

The consultant will have clinical accountability for the day-to-day management of the CED within the Trust in line with national, RCPCH and RCEM clinical standards and be present on the shop floor. Having an overarching view of the department, seeing and reviewing children, they will play a pivotal role in training our EM trainees and nurses to a high standard within paediatric emergency care.

Managerial responsibility to quality improvement, innovation within paediatric emergency medicine and establishing audit and research activities within this subspecialty both in the department and nationally – an area that is currently lacking. They will be supported by Lead PEM consultant in ED.
