Job overview
This post will involve working within the varying opening hours of the service including some early mornings, evening clinics and a Saturday morning clinic in Reading or Thatcham on a rotation. Time in lieu will be given for working Saturday clinics.
The base clinic will be at the Royal Berkshire Hospital site (21a Craven Road, Reading) but the appointee will need to work flexibly across the satellite locations also. The location of clinics may be changed in the future. The opening hours of the service are continually reviewed and may be changed in the future.
The appointee will join the existing team to provide specialist, expert care within the field of Sexual health and HIV.
This post is outpatient-based but will also include providing expert advice to inpatient teams and reviews of inpatients on an ad hoc basis.
The appointee will have active involvement in education, teaching and research. The appointee will be the named Lead for Oxford, Brunel and Southampton medical students within the department.
They will have the pre-requisite leadership, management and team working skills to play an active part in leadership and service development.
Applicants should have full General Medical Council (GMC) Registration with a current licence to practice. They should have obtained CCT in Genito-Urinary Medicine, or expect to obtain within six months of the interview date.
Please note the simulation date is 4/9/25 and the interview date is 23/09/25.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Responsibilities:
Provide care for patients attending integrated sexual health appointments and walk-in sessions. C ontribute to the ‘Doctor of the day’ (DOD) rota. Pr ovide training and supervision of medical students and postgraduate trainees. Pr ovide, expert advice and decision making within multidisciplinary team meetings for HIV, genito-urinary medicine (GUM) and safeguarding.
Provide care for patients in specialist/complex clinics, including: HIV, complex GUM and genital dermatology.
Active participation in clinical governance meetings within the department.
Participation and involvement in meetings and other business in Sexual Health and HIV service.
As and when appropriate, to lead as part of job planning. Examples include but are not limited to Clinical Governance Lead and Audit Lead.
Education and Training :
Become the Undergraduate/medical student lead within the department.
Play an active role in the education and supervision of resident doctors, nurses, and health professionals.
Research and Development :
Contribute to a culture of research and development within the department, keeping up-to-date with the latest research and best practices.
Patient Safety and Quality Improvement :
Be proactive approach to patient safety and quality improvement, including participation in audits, clinical governance meetings, and implementing quality improvement methods.

· Participation and involvement in meetings. To become the Undergraduate/medical student lead within the department (to encompass Southampton, Oxford and Brunel medical students) including overseeing placements, training and assessments.

Person specification
Education and Qualifications
* Full registration with the GMC with a current licence to practice
* Holds CCT in Genito-urinary Medicine within 6 months of gaining CCT at interview date
* MRCP (UK) or equivalent
* Diploma in Genitourinary Medicine
* Diploma in HIV Medicine
Clinical Experience
* Fully trained in Sexual Health and HIV medicine
* Experience of complex outpatient and Inpatient HIV care
* Experience of genital dermatology care and complex GUM
* Ability to make clinical decisions at consultant level and managing vulnerable populations within an MDT
Audit Management and IT
* Ability to work within clinical governance guidelines
* Undertake audits and present data as required
* Good IT skills, use of patient and hospital database
* Evidence of clinical leadership role demonstrating accountability for quality of care, financial controls and efficient management of workforce
Reserach, Teaching Skill and Experience
* Evidence of providing good teaching and supervision to trainees
* Track record of publications in peer reviewed journals
* Higher research degree or qualification (e.g. Masters, PhD etc)
* Completion of a formal training/teaching skills course
* Formal educational qualification or certification
* Evidence of previous educational leadership role for undergraduate or postgraduate students/trainees
* Evidence of previous leadership and/or management roles within a clinical or academic department
* Contributes to improving patients’ experience and see patients as individuals and involve them in decisions about their care
* Ability to work in partnership to deliver a patient centred service
