Overview
Reporting to the Camp Manager and working alongside a like-minded team, swimming teachers are responsible for planning and delivering safe, structured, fun and active sessions to children aged between 5 and 17 in the school holidays. Swim Teachers need to adapt for varying age and ability levels (children are grouped by age, typically 5-7, 8-10, 11-14, 15-17), focusing on developing water-confidence and basic stroke development. The programme focuses on getting children active through structured, active games and fun activities rather than a learn to swim programme. Safety is our number one priority, and Swim Teachers work closely with Lifeguards to ensure preparation of areas and equipment, management of risk assessments, monitoring of water conditions, and management of incidents. Children and staff must adhere to the Kings Camps Swimming Policy, the venue Normal Operating Procedure and Emergency Action Plan. Sessions typically last 30 - 45 minutes with a maximum of 16 children in the pool; session times and pool availability will vary but generally run from 9.30am – 3.30pm, Monday to Friday.
Child safety is our number one priority, so you will ensure the welfare of children is paramount at all times, supervising children during breaks, participating in swimming sessions, overseeing the safe use of equipment, promptly recording any incidents, and implementing behaviour management policies while upholding health and safety standards and procedures.
Responsibilities
* Plan and deliver safe, structured, active sessions for children aged 5-17 during school holidays, focusing on water confidence and basic stroke development, with sessions typically 30-45 minutes and a maximum of 16 children in the pool.
* Work with Lifeguards to prepare areas and equipment, manage risk assessments, monitor water conditions, and manage incidents.
* Ensure adherence to Kings Camps Swimming Policy, venue SOP and Emergency Action Plan.
* Supervise breaks, participate in swimming sessions, oversee equipment use, promptly record incidents, implement behaviour management policies, and uphold health and safety standards.
Qualifications
* SEQ Level 2 or STA Level 2 Swimming Teacher certification.
* 12+ months' experience as a swim teacher.
* 6+ months experience working with 5-17-year-olds.
* Desirable: Lifeguard qualification (NPLQ) or NRASTC; up-to-date certification.
* A collaborative attitude, comfortable with rotating duties and forming positive relationships with children, the venue, parents and staff.
* Knowledge of conducting risk assessments.
* Ability to design, plan and deliver safe, dynamic sessions from poolside.
