Job Summary

The Deputy Medical Director is a senior clinical leader within LCW's Clinical Leadership and Governance function. The role is responsible for quality, safety, performance and transformation across GP practices and Urgent Treatment Centres.


Main Duties of the Job

The postholder is responsible for senior medical leadership across LCW GP practices and Urgent Treatment Centres, ensuring services are safe, compliant and aligned with commissioner and organisational priorities. They provide senior medical oversight across various clinical domains, maintain clinical sessions to deliver high‑quality, innovative care, drive cultural change, cost efficiency and support the delivery of QOF, Enhanced Services and PCN/ICB requirements.

Core Responsibilities

* Corporate Clinical Leadership & Governance
o Act as senior member of LCW's Clinical Leadership and Governance structure.
o Deputise for the Medical Director internally and externally as required.
o Participate in the clinical on‑call rota, maintain familiarity with EPRR processes, attend training and exercises.
o Act as Deputy Caldicott Guardian as required.
* Senior Clinical Input
o Risk registers, safety alert dissemination, public health incidents and outbreaks.
o Real‑time senior clinical leadership during serious incidents.
o Undertake Clinical Safety Officer training and lead related projects.
* Safeguarding
o Senior oversight of safeguarding across GP and UTC services.
o Ensure policies and SOPs implemented consistently.
o Support safeguarding supervision, training compliance and reflective practice.
o Act as senior advisor on complex safeguarding cases and maintain relationships with safeguarding boards.
* Medicines Management
o Senior accountability for medicines management within GP surgeries and UTCs.
o Ensure compliance with Controlled Drugs regulations, ICB formularies, prescribing, storage, audit requirements.
o Support Medicines Management Lead and contribute to meetings.
o Provide oversight of EPS/non‑EPS environments, incidence, complaints, SOP development, incident learning.
* Service‑Specific Clinical Leadership (GP & UTCs)
o Provide senior clinical leadership and strategic input for West Middlesex UTC, Imperial UTC GP, Whittington UTC, LCW GP practices and Hammersmith Centres for Health.
o Line‑manage and support Clinical Lead/Directors where applicable.
o Ensure services meet CQC requirements, national UTC standards, contractual and commissioner expectations (QOF, LES/DES, PCN contracts).
* Clinical Oversight
o Patient flow, streaming, redirection.
o Workforce resilience, productivity.
o Quality improvement, audit outcomes, patient engagement.
o Complaints, incidents, risk management.
* Workforce, Training & Assurance
o Recruitment, onboarding, clinical induction of GPs, trainees and senior clinicians.
o Ensure clinicians remain compliant (appraisal, revalidation, statutory training, scope of practice).
o Support performance management, mentorship, leadership development.
o Act as Freedom to Speak Up Champion, promote psychological safety.
o Serve as Mental Health First Aider for staff wellbeing.
* Transformation & Innovation
o Senior leadership for transformation and digital delivery across GP and UTC services.
o Support innovation aligned with LCW strategy, bid development, service redesign.
o Implement digital tools safely, develop leadership capabilities.


Qualifications

* MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
* Full registration with GMC.
* Certification of Completion of Training (JCPTGP/PMETB).
* Inclusion on Performers List.
* Evidence of commitment to ongoing personal & professional development.
* MRCGP (desirable)


Experience

* Experience in primary care, significant health problems area.
* Experience delivering primary care in hours and in Urgent Treatment Centres.
* GP minimum 3 years’ experience.
* Experience in audit, improving patient care, digital health (desirable).
* Training as CSO or willingness to undertake training.
* Experience of lead/digital roles; transformation and cultural change (desirable).

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: £115,000 to £120,000 a year, pro rata. Permanent contract with flexible working pattern.
