The Job Summary:
Due to continued growth in both our business and finance function, Wrightbus is strengthening its indirect tax capability and is recruiting a dedicated VAT & Intrastat Specialist. This position is designed for an experienced, hands-on specialist who wants responsibility, influence, and the chance to embed best practice within a complex, fast-moving manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
VAT Compliance & Advisory
* Own and manage all VAT compliance activities, including:
* Preparation and submission of VAT returns
* VAT reconciliations and payments
* EC Sales Lists (where applicable)
* Supporting partial exemption or complex VAT treatments where required
* Act as the primary point of contact for VAT matters across the business.
* Provide practical VAT guidance on:
* Domestic and international transactions
* Imports and exports
* Capital expenditure and supply-chain movements
* Liaise with HMRC and external advisors as required.
* Support VAT audits, reviews and enquiries.
Intrastat Reporting
* Own the preparation and submission of accurate and timely Intrastat declarations.
* Ensure compliance with statistical requirements and reporting deadlines.
* Reconcile Intrastat data to ERP transactions and VAT reporting.
* Work closely with logistics and procurement teams to ensure accurate movement data is captured at source.
Customs & Duty (Desirable / Supporting Area)
* Apply working knowledge of customs and duty processes to support VAT and Intrastat accuracy.
* Liaise with customs brokers and freight forwarders.
* Understand how customs values, commodity codes and import documentation impact VAT and reporting.
* Support reviews or audits relating to customs and trade compliance.
Controls, Systems & Process Improvement
* Maintain and enhance VAT and Intrastat controls and documentation.
* Support ERP and system improvements impacting tax, trade or logistics data.
* Identify opportunities to streamline reporting and reduce manual intervention.
Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing
* Work closely with Finance, Procurement, Logistics and Operations teams.
* Provide training and guidance to finance colleagues on VAT and Intrastat matters.
* Build strong working relationships to improve data quality and compliance across the business.
* Comply with GDPR and maintain strict confidentiality.
The Requirements:
* Candidates may be fully qualified, part-qualified, AAT qualified, or qualified by experience OR
* Professional accounting or tax qualifications (ACCA, CIMA, ATT, CTA) are advantageous but not essential OR
* Strong practical experience and technical competence are prioritised over formal qualifications.
* Strong VAT compliance experience, including returns preparation and reconciliation.
* Experience advising on VAT treatment in a business environment.
* Experience working with cross‑border or manufacturing VAT transactions.
* Experience handling documentation or processes related to imports/exports.
* Solid understanding of UK VAT rules, zero‑rating, and international VAT implications.
* Good awareness of indirect tax concepts relating to imports/exports.
* Strong Excel skills and analytical capability. Ability to interpret VAT legislation and communicate clearly.
* Detail‑focused, organised, and proactive.
* Strong communicator, capable of explaining tax concepts to non‑finance teams.
* Confident working independently and taking ownership.
* Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise effectively.
* Positive, proactive attitude with a willingness to learn.
* Strong problem-solving skills and analytical mindset.
