Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

As this vacancy has limited funding the maximum salary that can be offered is Grade 7 Spinal Point 28, salary £36,636

Grade: 7

Part Time (0.4 FTE), Fixed Term contract up to August 2026

Closing date: 24th February 2026

This role is also open as an internal secondment opportunity which would need to be agreed by your current line manager.

Background

To assist in GIS-based research and flood risk modelling to create knowledge through providing research support for WM-Adapt and Resilient Systems Climate Action research group.

Role Summary

* Work within WM-Adapt project to support GIS-based research and flood risk modelling

* Operate within area of weather impacts on urban areas

* Contribute to publications on flood risk modelling, weather impacts and climate adaptation

* Analyse and interpret research findings and results from flood risk and environmental models

Main Duties

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

* Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
* Analyse and interpret data from flood risk models and GIS datasets
* Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
* Contribute to developing and applying flood risk models, and develop techniques for understanding weather impacts on urban areas
* Undertake management/administration arising from research
* Contribute to Resilient Systems and Climate Action group research-related activities and research-related administration
* Contribute to public and stakeholder engagement activities on weather and climate resilience
* Collect research data to support flood risk modelling or developing weather impact databases
* Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
* Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
* Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
* First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
* High level analytical capability and experience using environmental modelling approaches
* Ability to communicate complex information clearly
* Fluency in relevant models including the SynxFlow flood model, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
* Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
* Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
* Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
* Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly

Person Specification
