Role specification
Trustees play a vital role in providing strategic leadership, governance and oversight across Swale Academies Trust. Working collectively as part of the Board, Trustees ensure that the Trust fulfils its charitable objectives, maintains strong educational and financial performance, and acts in the best interests of its pupils, staff and wider communities.
Trustees also provide constructive challenge and independent oversight, supporting the Board in its responsibility to ensure that the Trust’s schools are safe, sustainable and well-governed environments for learning.
Key responsibilities include:
5. Contributing to the development and scrutiny of the Trust’s overall strategy, ensuring alignment with its vision and values
6. Providing independent challenge and support to the executive team, highlighting risks, opportunities and areas for improvement
7. Overseeing the Trust’s financial and operational performance, ensuring resources are used effectively and deliver impact
8. Ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, including those relating to safeguarding and risk management
9. Promoting good governance, ethical leadership and a culture of transparency and accountability
10. Acting as an ambassador for the Trust, championing its mission and strengthening links with local communities and stakeholders
Trustees are expected to bring curiosity, integrity and independence of thought, contributing their professional expertise while working collaboratively with fellow Board members.
Person specification
The Board seeks a Trustee with a passion for education and a commitment to improving outcomes for all learners, especially in areas of high deprivation. Trustees will share the Trust’s belief in the power of education to transform lives and communities, and will bring strategic insight, independence of thought and sound judgement to the role.
The Board is open-minded about candidates’ professional backgrounds and welcomes applications from senior leaders across all sectors - public, private and not-for-profit. Relevant experience may come from areas such as governance, finance, estates, operations, facilities management, or leading complex organisations.
In particular, the Board is interested in those with experience in some of the following areas:
11. Experience operating at board level in a medium-sized organisation or equivalent governance experience
12. Financial acumen with the ability to scrutinise budgets and explore efficiency opportunities
13. Strategic thinking skills, especially in organisational leadership and improvement
14. Oversight of managing diverse and complex organisations ( 12,500 students, 2,500 staff, and a £100m turnover)
15. Experience in estates or facilities management (desirable)
All candidates will have empathy for working in diverse, community-focused settings with varying challenges, and an interest in fostering collaboration, innovation, and professional development within education.
