About The Role
This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference on the front‑line supporting residents and visitors, keeping neighbourhoods clean and tidy. The Cleaner Neighbourhoods Team provides litter picking, fly‑tip removal and basic grounds maintenance, emptying litter bins and handling unwanted bulk items.
As Chargehand you will work in a team, carry out a variety of functions including driving Council vehicles, and manage day‑to‑day operations in all weather.
Key Responsibilities
* Supervise, support and coordinate a small team of 5-10 operatives, allocating tasks and ensuring safe, effective work.
* Keep accurate electronic and written records.
* Deliver a customer‑focused, friendly service.
* Learn new tasks quickly, follow route sheets, work outdoors in all weather.
* Cover for Environmental Action Team Leader as required.
* Assist with fly‑tip and bulky item removal, lift and load onto collection vehicle.
* Clean detritus, weed removal, surface cleaning, litter bin maintenance, graffiti removal, etc.
* Support garden clearance for council housing, assist vulnerable tenants, maintain walkways, gates.
* Perform seasonal duties: snow/ice removal, gritting, investigative tasks, community engagement.
* Use fleet vehicles, maintain safety and compliance, report hazards, maintain equipment.
* Communicate with public, partners, and local representatives.
* Maintain records (timesheets, safety docs) accurately.
* Assist with development training, health and safety procedures, equality and diversity policy.
Qualifications
* Driving licence and relevant qualifications for vehicle use.
* Basic numeracy and literacy.
Experience
* Experience using powered and mechanical equipment.
* Experience in environmental maintenance tasks.
* Experience working in an area‑based team with initiative.
* Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
* Experience supervising and organising the work of others.
