We’re looking for a highly skilled, adaptable and self-motivated machinist to provide technical support to the Mechanical Services Main Workshop and CNC Manufacturing facility. You will be responsible for providing technical advice, instruction and support to academic and research staff and students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. You will provide the staff and students of the Department with skilled, technical support for the design and manufacture of unique devices, the repair, modification and construction of new and existing equipment and the manufacture of new components. You will also support the teaching and supervision of undergraduates in the use of machine and hand tools and provide technical support during final year individual projects. You will also support our student automotive race teams including both mechanical and electric powered vehicles and our electric motorcycle team, providing both technical and manufacturing support. In addition, you may provide instruction to our undergraduates in the safe operation of conventional lathes and milling machines in our student workshop. This position is offered on a full-time, open-ended basis. We are open to flexible working requests for this position. About you: Our ideal candidate will: have served a recognised, relevant apprenticeship or City and Guilds qualification or have equivalent experience of working in a similar environment be proficient in the safe operation and use of a variety of mechanical workshop machine tools together with design, fitting and assembly skills have experience in CNC programming and machining, as well as conventional precision machining Knowledge and experience of Computer Aided Design (CAD) programming would be an advantage but training will be available if necessary to develop these skills.
