Overview

Head of Music role at WMJobs. Salary: MPS/UPS + TLR 2b. The post-holder will be expected to undertake duties in-line with the professional teacher standards for qualified teachers.

Responsible to: Faculty Leader of Design and Performance.


Responsibilities

* Establish a safe and stimulating environment for pupils, rooted in mutual respect.
* Set goals that stretch and challenge pupils of all backgrounds, abilities and dispositions.
* Demonstrate consistently the positive attitudes, values and behaviour expected of pupils.
* Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils; be accountable for pupils’ attainment, progress and outcomes.
* Aware of pupils’ capabilities and prior knowledge; plan teaching to build on these.
* Guide pupils to reflect on their progress and emerging needs.
* Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how pupils learn and how this impacts teaching.
* Encourage pupils to take a responsible and conscientious attitude to their own work and study.
* Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge; foster and maintain pupils’ interest and address misunderstandings.
* Demonstrate an understanding of developments in the subject and curriculum; promote the value of scholarship.
* Promote high standards of literacy, articulacy and the use of standard English, whatever the teacher’s subject.
* Plan and teach well-structured lessons; impart knowledge and develop understanding through effective use of lesson time.
* Promote a love of learning and intellectual curiosity; set homework and plan other activities to consolidate knowledge and understanding.
* Reflect systematically on the effectiveness of lessons and approaches to teaching.
* Contribute to an engaging curriculum within the relevant subject area(s).
* Differentiate teaching appropriately to meet the needs of all pupils; understand how factors can inhibit learning and how to overcome them.
* Understand the needs of all pupils, including those with SEN, EAL, high ability, and disabilities; use and evaluate teaching approaches to engage and support them.
* Know how to assess the relevant subject and curriculum areas, including statutory requirements; use formative and summative assessment to secure progress.
* Use data to monitor progress, set targets and plan subsequent lessons; give regular feedback and encourage responses to feedback.
* Manage behaviour effectively to create a good and safe learning environment; establish clear rules and routines in line with the school policy.
* Maintain high expectations of behaviour and use a range of strategies to promote discipline consistently and fairly.
* Develop positive relationships with pupils and exercise appropriate authority when necessary.
* Make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school, including extra-curricular provision.
* Develop effective professional relationships with colleagues and deploy support staff effectively; pursue professional development and respond to feedback.
* Communicate effectively with parents regarding pupils’ achievements and wellbeing.


Person Specification

* Qualification: Degree-level or higher; possesses QTS status or equivalent.
* Experience: Evidence of successful practice as a teacher in a secondary school; track record of improving teaching and student outcomes; experience in developing schemes of learning and involvement in enrichment activities.
* Knowledge: Up-to-date knowledge of the curriculum (including A/AS level and GCSE); understanding of effective teaching strategies to inspire high aspirations; familiarity with educational research to facilitate learning; awareness of safeguarding requirements and policies.
* Leadership: Ability to lead by example; effective team worker and leader; high expectations for accountability and consistency; motivation to continually improve standards and inspire excellence; empathetic and attentive listening.
* Teaching and Learning: ICT skills; numeracy for data analysis; strong communication; energy, resilience and perseverance; commitment to educational research; excellent classroom practice with reflective improvement; effective behaviour management; strategic thinking about tailoring lessons to student needs; ability to interpret complex student data to drive progress; excellent planning and organisational skills; ability to produce clear, well-written documents for varied audiences.
