The Community Rehabilitation Service currently has an opportunity for an innovative and enthusiastic Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join their team. The Community Rehabilitation Service is a multi-disciplinary therapy team providing assessment and rehabilitation in a community setting for those with a range of progressive or acquired neurological conditions. The work is community based and so you must be able to travel throughout the boroughs of Havering and Barking and Dagenham efficiently and effectively. The team has two sites which are currently Yew Tree Resource Centre, Romford, RM7 9AA and at Porters Avenue Health Centre, RM8 2EQ. The successful applicants will be required to work from the two sites to support junior staff and manage complex patients across the two boroughs.

There is a well-established appraisal system and a commitment to support staff to develop leadership and clinical skills, through regular supervision, a structured neurology in-service training programme and internal and external training opportunities. The service works closely with our colleagues across the Stroke and Neurology pathway including our Stroke Unit at Meadow Court, Goodmayes, and our team of specialist nurses in PD, MND and MS to aid us in the holistic management of our patients.


Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

Providing specialist occupational therapy assessment and treatment to patients with stroke and neurological conditions, taking into consideration the patient’s physical/cognitive/perceptual skills to identify the patient’s abilities and areas of difficulty.

Taking a role in the leadership of junior staff and support assistants, through supervision, training and appraisal.

Achieving and maintaining quality care through the delivery of evidence-based practice and adherence with national guidance.

Working as part of the multidisciplinary team across the Stroke and Neurology pathway liaising and supporting our therapy colleagues in the community as required.

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers, and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period.

High Cost Area Supplement - Outer London

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15%of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,714 and a maximum payment of £5,941 - per annum, pro rata for part time


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are also currently working closely with our neighbouring acute Trust BHRUT to review our future integrated stroke acute and community pathway. As such there may be opportunities for greater collaborative joint working in the future.

You will be responsible for the assessment and treatment planning of those referred to the service and have the opportunity to develop and enhance your existing clinical skills. You will have a role in the leadership of junior staff and rehabilitation assistants, through supervision, training and appraisal whilst also being involved in the on-going development of the service.

Essential Criteria for the post include:

Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy and current HCPC registration

Clinical expertise and experience within the specialist of stroke and neurology. Previous experience in an inpatient stroke rehab setting is an asset.

To be able to travel efficiently throughout the boroughs of Havering and Barking and Dagenham

We are looking for a candidate who is a team player, enthusiastic, flexible and who possess excellent negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills.

Pending interview, a B5/6 development role may be considered if the successful candidate does not quite have the full post graduate stroke/neurology experience required for a B6 position as detailed in the person spec.

Person specification


Experience

* To have experience working within the field of neurology and stroke as an Occupational Therapist
* Experience working as a qualified Occupational Therapist for 18 months
* Experience of MDT working
* Previous experience working in the UK or a similar health economy
* Evidence of post registration courses completed in neurological conditions
* Membership of a special interest group


knowledge

* An awareness of NHS Plan, NSF and clinical governance priorities
* Demonstrate specialist clinical knowledge and experience in the field of neurology and ability to adapt to various settings
* Understanding of OT processes, models and evidence based practice
* Knowledge of equipment and adaptions
* Good understanding of the role of occupational therapy in rehabilitation as well as the role of other professionals in the MDT


Skills

* Basic awareness of IT and IT skills
* Clinical reasoning skills – ability to decide and establish appropriate action in allocation of workload and other clinical decisions
* Organisational skills: To be innovative and work on own initiative and prioritise own workload
* Time management skills – ability to prioritise and implement management strategies for self and others
