The Role

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Sociology for a fixed period of 12 months (September 2025 to August 2026) to provide cover for a Leverhulme Fellowship. Key responsibilities for the post will be teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels ensuring an outstanding teaching experience for our students along with core taught programme supervision and administration. This is a fixed-term (1 year) teaching and scholarhip lectureship.

Key Accountabilities

This Lecturer position is designed to provide excellent scholarship, as well as fulfil key teaching and administrative roles in Sociology, in particular:

Teaching & Learning

1. To provide high quality teaching and learning and student support
2. Mentor and support students throughout their studies in the role of personal tutor
3. Set and mark assessment of modules in accordance with University standards and utilise on-line and digitised curricula and education frameworks
4. Contribute to curriculum development
5. Ensure all our students benefit from studying in a research intensive, research excellent academic environment
6. Provide education for life, that engages, challenges and supports our students to discover and fulfil their potential both while they are studying with us and once they have graduated
7. Support modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels particularly in the areas of the Sociology of Crime
8. Provide undergraduate and postgraduate taught supervision

Administrative

9. Undertake a range of administrative tasks to support your area of teaching, and/or engagement for example, recruitment
10. Contribute to the wider work of the School, Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups and committees
11. Operate as an active citizen in the Sociology community
12. Contribute to the schools international, programme and professional body accreditations
13. To have a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and ethics, responsibility and sustainability

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Essential

14. Demonstrable research interest in the Sociology of Crime
15. Ability to design and deliver high quality teaching and learning materials, resources and activities in line with the Unit’s, School and Faculty teaching objectives
16. Ability to contribute to student dissertation supervision
17. Ability to develop, mark and assess student assignments and provide timely feedback to students
18. Ability to provide personal tutoring and pastoral support
19. Ability to use virtual learning environment
20. Excellent written and oral communication skills
21. Excellent organisational, time management and presentation skills
22. Demonstration of successful team working
23. Personal resilience in a context of change and fast paced environment

Desirable

24. Ability to use online teaching methods
25. Show commitment to knowledge sharing with the private and public sectors, and with civil society, with especial reference to marginalised and disadvantaged social groups
26. Particular interests in Black Feminist Theory and/or Abolitionist/Community Power approaches

Qualifications

27. PhD (completed or awaiting viva) in Sociology or Criminology (or equivalent) (essential)
28. A good Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject
29. A relevant Professional Body Membership as appropriate to the subject area (Desirable)
30. HE teaching qualification (or equivalent experience) (Desirable)
