Requirements
Pre-Employment Checks for Teaching Positions
If successful, employment is conditional on satisfactory completion of checks such as medical screening, two references (including your most recent employer), verification of qualifications, and eligibility to work in the UK. Registration with the General Teaching Council Scotland (GTCS) and a PVG check for Regulated Work with Children are also required.
Registration and Vetting
Applicants for permanent posts must be registered with GTCS. Details are available at: www.gtcs.org.uk
This role involves Regulated Work with Children under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Applicants must not be barred from working with children. Successful candidates will need a PVG Scheme membership, which the applicant must fund. The cost is £59 for full membership and £18 for record updates, payable via salary deductions over specified periods. If employment ends before full repayment, deductions will continue from the final salary.
Applicants must disclose any unspent convictions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Failure to disclose may result in withdrawal of the job offer. Having a criminal record does not automatically disqualify an applicant; decisions depend on the nature of the offence and its relevance to the role.
Note: Disclosure Scotland now issues PVG certificates via email, available for 14 days. You must share this with your employer within this period to avoid additional costs.
