The paediatric Metabolic Bone Disease Service at Sheffield Children’s Hospital is currently looking for a senior paediatric nurse (Band 6) to join their multi-disciplinary team.

This is a permanent post and is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dedicated team caring for children with all forms of metabolic bone disease, predominantly osteogenesis imperfecta.

We are a nationally commissioned service heavily involved in research and new drug therapies for our patient group.

The CNS team provide patients and their families with education and support at the time of diagnosis and beyond. They are a point of contact for families and other healthcare professionals.

The role also involves co-ordination and organisation of patient admissions, including medical treatments for children who travel from throughout the UK to attend our specialist service.

Working within a specialist Children’s hospital, the successful candidate can expect to build close working relationships with other members of the team such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers and psychology.

Applicants must be NMC registered and have at least 2 years Band 5 experience.

Evidence of excellent communication skills and the ability to work well within a busy multi- disciplinary team is required.

Main duties of the job

Reporting into the Clinical Nurse Specialist, some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Deliver and evaluate specialist nursing care across a range of settings
  • Support service development through policies, guidelines and care pathways.
  • Provide clinical leadership, supervision, education and training
  • Advocate for children, young people and families, promoting age‑appropriate care
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and external partners.
  • Contribute to data collection, audit and research to improve outcomes

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

  • RNC/RN8 degree or diploma level
  • Current NMC registration
  • Relevant post registration qualification as required for speciality
  • 998 or mentorship / supervisor training
  • Clinical skills and pathophysiology module (or willingness to undertake depending on role within speciality)
  • Good Clinical Practice GCP certificate

Experience

  • Experience of providing clinical advice in relation to the specialist area.
  • Experience of determining appropriate solution to problems pulling on different information available.
  • Experience of planning provision of care for patients.
  • Mentoring experience with nursing students and training/development teaching of junior colleagues

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of clinical governance activities, including audit, benchmarking and quality improvement.
  • Ability to dynamically risk assess clinical situations and respond appropriately.
  • Ability to monitor and respond to changes in patient conditions effectively.
  • Effective communication skills to provide guidance and education to patients.
  • Skills in collecting and analysing data and using evidence based practice to improve patient outcomes.

  • Ability to manage complex and challenging situations with empathy.
  • Ability to respect the cultural, social, and religious diversity within society.
  • Access to transportation to travel around the city, region or country.
