Main duties of the job
As a Pharmacy Technician, you will provide medicines management services to patients within the prison, supported by a prison service pharmacist. Your responsibilities include administering medicines, dispensing prescriptions and stock items, supervising assistants, stock control and reporting deficiencies.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Key Task and Responsibilities
* Provide a medicines optimisation service to the prison.
* Provide a medicines administration service to offenders at the scheduled times as part of a 7‑day per week rota.
* Undertake medicines reconciliation for newly admitted prisoners.
* Supervise assistants in the dispensary.
* Act as an accredited checking technician, providing final dispensing checks or holding a medicines optimisation qualification.
* Ensure high standards of work in the dispensary, in clinics and on the wings, and adhere to all SOPs.
* Assist the Senior Prisons Technician with writing, updating and monitoring the use of medicines optimisation SOPs.
Person specification
Education/Qualifications
* NVQ Level 3 Pharmacy Services or equivalent.
* Registration with the GPhC as a pharmacy technician.
* Evidence of CPD.
* Working toward an Accredited Checking or MM Technician certificate.
Experience
* Previous experience working in a pharmacy.
* Previous prison or mental health pharmacy experience.
Skills and abilities
* Good knowledge of working within SOPs.
* Ability to use computer packages including Pharmacy Manager/JAC and Microsoft Office.
* Strong initiative and problem‑solving skills.
* Basic understanding of mental illness and substance misuse.
