General Manager / Curator - Dinosaur Isle
The Isle of Wight Heritage Service is looking for a General Manager / Curator to lead the management and development of Dinosaur Isle.
Located on Sandown seafront on the Isle of Wight, Dinosaur Isle Museum is widely regarded as the home of the most important dinosaur collection in the United Kingdom (outside of the national collection). The museum holds a collection of over 35,000 specimens which record the 130‑million‑year story of the Island. Dinosaur Isle is an Accredited Museum; it welcomes over 50,000 visitors a year and is an important tourist attraction for the Isle of Wight.
We are looking to recruit an individual who has extensive experience of managing a tourist attraction, cultural organisation or museum; who can work with colleagues and partners to create a sustainable business plan for the museum and its collections. The museum is currently undergoing building improvements funded by the Arts Council's Museum Estate and Development Fund. We are looking for an individual who can lead the museum forward, maximising visitor numbers, securing grants to develop the museum displays and working to ensure Museum Accreditation status is maintained.
Qualifications
* Proven financial skills of managing budgets and reviewing performance and creating marketing plans
* Experience of guiding a busy team, volunteers and a friendly organisation. Someone who is confident and skilled in strengthening internal and external networks
* Experience of managing workplace risks and leading on health and safety for the museum
Job Requirements
Provide leadership, direction and effective management of the museum, including all of its assets, its financial resources and its employees. This will include effective human resource management through recruitment, retention and development of staff. Be responsible for all matters of health and safety in accordance with Council policies.
Demonstrate an entrepreneurial approach by preparing and maintaining a Business Plan designed to develop and improve Dinosaur Isle and its collections. The business plan should aim to maximise the usage and financial sustainability of Dinosaur Isle through grants, projects, exhibitions and events.
Job Responsibilities
Prepare and implement a marketing and promotion plan that realises the objectives of the business plan and can take advantage of appropriate public relations and media opportunities.
Ensure the physical care of the Geology collections, acquiring material in accordance with the agreed Acquisition Policy. Maintain records of geological specimens in accordance with agreed procedures and documentation standards, including records of their movement and whereabouts. Lead accreditation applications relating to the Geology Collections and Dinosaur Isle.
Maximise the educational benefit of the museum and facilitate the continued research of the collection, working with local universities as well as world‑leading palaeontologists and ensuring that enquiries are answered to the highest standards. Act as an ambassador for the museum locally, regionally and nationally in order to enhance the museum's sustainable operation and future developments.
