Overview
University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) is recruiting a Pharmacy Technician to support our highly regarded Pharmacy Cancer Services team. The role will involve dispensing and accuracy checking of systemic anti‑cancer therapy (SACT), clinical trials and supportive medicines at the Royal Stoke and County Hospital sites. The position is open to both full‑time and part‑time candidates and carries a Band 5 salary of £31,049 to £37,796 per annum, pro rata (Agenda for change).
Main Duties
* Provide dispensary‑based activities in the Cancer Centre hub, including dispensing and accuracy checking of prescriptions and specialised items such as chemotherapy and clinical trials.
* Work as an Accredited Checking Technician.
* Dispense and accuracy check clinical trials in accordance with the dispensing protocol under the direction of the Clinical Trials Technician/Pharmacist.
* Support pharmaceutical services to wards and departments, particularly the oncology/haematology ward and emergency admissions unit.
* Liaise with pharmacists and ward staff for bed availability and support ordering of inpatient chemotherapy.
* Participate in medicines management and safety/quality initiatives within the Pharmacy Directorate.
Responsibilities
You will be supported in your training and further development by the experienced Pharmacy Cancer team and will play a key role in the delivery of treatments for cancers. The role is primarily based at the Royal Stoke site but may require working across all UHNM hospital sites as service demands require.
Essential Qualifications
* NVQ level 3 in Pharmaceutical Services OR National BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent national qualification plus accredited underpinning knowledge.
* National Accredited Checking Technician (ACT) qualification.
* Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
Desirable Qualifications
* Member of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians.
Essential Skills and Experience
* Minimum 2‑year post‑qualification experience.
* Commitment to professional updating and continuous professional development.
* Current knowledge of specialist areas: ward‑based services, dispensary, aseptic, distribution and/or procurement.
* Patient counselling skills – pleasant professional manner; knowledge of medication use; advising patients and assessing individual pharmaceutical care needs.
* Computer literacy with strong keyboard skills for pharmacy computer systems, including stock ordering, receiving and rectifying discrepancies.
Desirable Skills and Experience
* Experience with automation/digitalisation.
* Experience working in oncology/haematology.
* Interest in new ways of working and developing specialist clinical knowledge.
* Experience in staff management.
