This fixed term nursing role within Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust’s Children’s Community Nursing Service (CCNS) focuses on clinical and public health nursing for children, young people, and families, supporting the move towards 7-day working. The Children & Young People’s Community Nurse (CYP CN) will work with the team lead and senior nurses to help develop the local and countywide CCNS, aligning practice with Trust and national standards.
The post holder will deliver specialist community nursing care, providing expert knowledge and liaising with clinical specialists as needed. As a Registered Nurse (Child), they will promote health, deliver safe, high-quality care, and collaborate with professionals across healthcare and partner agencies.
Responsibilities include educating and supporting staff, mentoring students, and acting as a specialist practitioner in the community. If qualified, the post holder may prescribe for children up to age 19, in line with professional competence and Trust policy. They are accountable for safe prescribing practice and must complete the Trust’s prescribing declaration before doing so.
The nurse will also have a safeguarding role, working in line with The Children Act (1989 & 2004) and Working Together to Safeguard Children (2013).
This is a fixed term contract for 8 months to cover maternity leave
Manage high-quality nursing care, support, and advice for a delegated Children’s Community Nursing Team (CCNT) caseload, ensuring appropriate resources are in place. Provide clinical expertise to support and educate staff in delivering specialist nursing care to children. Maintain strong communication with stakeholders, working in partnership across health, social care, education, and charities (e.g. hospices) to support seamless, family-centred care.
Contribute to the development, implementation, and review of clinical protocols and SOPs to support safe, evidence-based practice. Promote ongoing development of clinical skills within the team, ensuring competencies align with the needs of the caseload. Provide training to children, families, carers, and staff on equipment and treatment regimes.
Ensure accurate, timely documentation of all care and advice given, including telephone support. Act as a role model and clinical resource in children’s community nursing for colleagues and partner professionals. Engage in essential clinical updates and specialist interest groups both within the Trust and externally, contributing to the development of best practice standards.
Flexibility is essential; staff may be required to work across West Sussex and Brighton & Hove in line with service needs.
