Project engineer

Oldbury
Nuclear Restoration Services
Project engineer
€50,000 a year

Offer description

Are you an engineer who enjoys solving complex problems where the impact of your work really matters? In this role, you will help make the safe removal of nuclear‑contaminated legacy plant a reality, working at the sharp end of the UK’s nuclear clean‑up mission. Every solution you deliver directly reduces risk, protects people and the environment, and contributes to the long‑term decommissioning of the UK nuclear estate.

You will join a stable, long‑term, multi‑year programme and work alongside an experienced and supportive site team. The work is varied, technically interesting and grounded in real operational challenges, offering the chance to see your engineering decisions move from concept through to implementation at the workface.

You will be site‑based and accountable for engineering activities across the full project lifecycle. From understanding stakeholder needs and developing practical engineering solutions, through to guiding detailed design and supporting commissioning and decommissioning, your focus will be on delivering robust, safe and compliant outcomes in a high‑hazard environment.

The role blends hands‑on technical problem solving with coordination across contractors, designers and site teams. You will balance operational risk, apply sound engineering judgement and communicate clearly to ensure plant modifications and engineering changes are delivered safely from desktop studies through to site execution.

Key aspects of the role include:

* Translating project requirements into fit‑for‑purpose engineering deliverables that consider constructability, operability and site constraints from the outset
* Defining key constraints, attributes and assumptions, and developing the engineering deliverables that support solutions through to implementation
* Acting as a Nominated Responsible Engineer for plant modifications when required, ensuring engineering work is properly considered, safe and compliant
* Supporting safe delivery through application of CDM principles and, where required, accessing operational environments such as C3 and C4 areas, confined spaces and working with respiratory protection

Who Are We Looking For

You will bring experience from a practising engineering role, ideally mechanical or electrical, gained in an industrial or highly regulated environment. You do not need a nuclear background to succeed, but you do need confidence working to strict standards, an appetite to learn and the ability to apply good engineering judgement in complex settings. Full specialist training will be provided.

You will be qualified to HNC, degree level or equivalent, and comfortable reviewing risk, interpreting engineering standards and working with contractors to deliver practical solutions. Experience in project engineering, CDM awareness and knowledge of quality and safety management systems would be beneficial, however attitude, ownership and problem‑solving capability are just as important.

We are particularly keen to hear from engineers who can:

* Work collaboratively with suppliers, designers and site teams, taking ownership and driving tasks forward
* Interpret and apply engineering standards proportionately, maintaining control of documentation and supporting safe working practices
* Communicate technical information clearly, both in concise written deliverables and through confident verbal interaction, with proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Teams

We also welcome applications from those looking to develop and may not meet all essential criteria. In these cases, a lower grade may be offered as a development opportunity. The successful candidate would be supported with a Personal Development Plan (PDP) to enable progression into the role.

Some roles may also require full Security Clearance, which involves additional checks. For details, please refer to the Defence Business Services National Security Vetting (DBS NSV) guidance.

At NRS, we value diversity and inclusion and encourage applications from underrepresented groups. We want to ensure you feel supported throughout the application process and provide reasonable adjustments where necessary and requested. If you require any reasonable adjustments as part of your application or interview process, please do not hesitate to let us know.

We offer flexibility on base location for multi‑site roles and are happy to discuss flexible working options.

Please note that this vacancy may close earlier than the stated deadline should we receive a high volume of applications, so we encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible.
