Survey Technical Lead‑CADD – Transportation Specialist


Job Summary

The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.


Responsibilities

* Oversee or operate real time kinematic global positioning systems or total station.
* Oversee or perform data comparison from real time kinematic global positioning systems or total station.
* Perform as survey lead in construction survey office activities.
* Perform as survey lead in field activities.
* Set up, calibrate, use and maintain survey equipment.
* Process survey field data using MicroStation software and create new CADD files or merge with existing files as appropriate.
* Process electronic field data, build utility and drainage databases, and CADD files.
* Generate TIN models from field shots or point cloud data from laser scans.
* Investigate and locate lot corners, monuments, and section corners; lead land survey field work and documentation.
* Set up and operate global positioning systems and base stations.
* Communicate with contractors, landowners, consultants and supervisors to report progress or review work assignments.
* Prepare, process and evaluate survey data for location and construction surveys.
* Perform file maintenance and back‑up of data to close‑out and archive projects.
* Perform as project lead in the development of new or updated data processing procedures, instructing and mentoring survey employees.
* Maintain 1st, 2nd, and 3rd order control monuments.
* Assist with and perform as survey crew lead in performing 2nd order vertical geodetic control surveys.
* Lead and assist with performing 3rd order surveys for photo control, construction and location surveys, and right‑of‑way monumentation.
* Process geodetic control data and perform technical computations.
* Prepare a mapping project.
* Perform file maintenance and back‑up of regular and archived mapping files.
* Perform as survey lead in field construction.
* Organize land survey data, analyze, build or process information and assist the land surveyor in resolving issues regarding highway alignments and right‑of‑way.


Experience and Training Requirements

* Four years of experience performing surveys mapping (e.g., land, location, construction, and/or geodetic control surveys) including at least two years of experience utilizing computer‑aided drafting and design; OR
* Three years of experience performing surveys or mapping or related activities AND a combination of one year of experience performing roadway inspection or design. Two of the three years of experience must have included utilizing computer‑aided drafting and design.
* Education Substitution: A two‑year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four‑year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts.)
* Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in‑person or via two‑way radio and other electronic devices; and maintain routine written logs and simple records.


Preferred Qualifications

* Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation Generalist.


Additional Requirements

All candidates must submit to a background investigation prior to employment. The background check may include one or all of the following components:

* SEMA4 Records Check
* Criminal History Check
* Employment Reference Check
* Driver's License Check

This position is contingent upon the selected job candidate having a valid Commercial Driver’s License, must submit to a Federal Department of Transportation pre‑employment drug test (with negative test results) and is subject to future random drug and alcohol testing registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Commercial Driver’s License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
