An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Clinical Scientist in the Radiotherapy Physics Service in the South West Wales Cancer Centre (SWWCC) to move to a newly-created post of Operational Lead for Radiotherapy Physics. The post-holder will lead the day-to-day operations of the service, with responsibility for recruitment and induction of new staff; personnel arrangements including Managing Attendance at Work responsibilities; and coordinating clinical cover and leave. The post will drive a more efficient service through expertise in personnel management and recruitment.

The post-holder will be responsible for Medical Physics Expert (MPE) level advice and leadership to the Section on a range of areas.

The post-holder will provide advanced scientific leadership to aspects of the Radiotherapy Physics service, in particular in delivering new developments, treatment techniques and equipment to the Radiotherapy service. SWWCC provides advanced IMRT, VMAT and FFF-SABR radiotherapy treatments to patients across South West Wales, including the opportunity to participate in a range of current Clinical Trials.

This is an internal promotion, applications are welcome from registered Medical Physics Experts who are HCPC-registered Clinical Scientists in Radiotherapy Physics.

Main duties of the job

This post will suit a registered MPE with interest in leading the day-to-day operations of the Radiotherapy Physics service and developing senior managerial expertise. The post holder will be a Senior Manager with responsibility for Recruitment and Induction of new staff; section management and line management of staff, including the application across the section of the Managing Attendance at Work Policy; coordination and approval of clinical cover and leave; management of Sickness Reviews and Occupation Health referrals and disciplinary matters. The post holder will lead the Section recruitment process via Vacancy Control processes and the use of Trac. The post-holder will work with other senior management in ensuring accurate and applicable Job Descriptions are available and up to date. The post will have responsibility for the use of eRoster in recording attendance and absences for the Section.

As well as Operational Leadership and Personnel Management, the post-holder will have a significant governance and compliance role as an experienced MPE, including the provision of expert medical physics advice to all stakeholders of Radiotherapy Physics, to ensure a safe service.

The post holder will also be responsible for a major aspect of radiotherapy treatment planning or treatment delivery.

The successful candidate will already have an MSc in Medical Physics or equivalent, HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist and be formally registered as a Medical Physics Expert.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Accredited MSc in Medical Physics or equivalent
2. A PhD by research or equivalent evidence of R & D training
3. State Registration as a Clinical Scientist (HCPC)
4. Registered as a Certified Medical Physics Expert (MPE)

Desirable criteria

5. Understanding of the organisational policies and procedures (e.g. HR, financial)

Experience

Essential criteria

6. Extensive experience in radiotherapy physics
7. To be able to act as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE), as defined in IRMER Regulations 2017
8. Extensive specialised training and practical experience of the commissioning and clinical implementation of advanced techniques, e.g. IMRT.

Desirable criteria

9. Management qualification, such as a professional Certificate in Management, NVQ or above

Aptitude and Ability

Essential criteria

10. Evidence of Strong Scientific Leadership
11. Use of IT to record complex and critical clinical information and to extract information, adapting software if necessary.
12. Good management skills such as time, project and supervisory management

Desirable criteria

13. Able to take a longterm strategic view to developments in radiotherapy within the Health Board and at a national level.
