Position Overview
Applications are invited for a University Assistant/Associate Professorship in Civil Engineering. The successful applicant will be based in the Civil Engineering Division and will contribute to research in priority thematic areas including Sustainable Infrastructure and Structural Mechanics. We are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in Structural Design, interpreted broadly. This may include novel methods for the design or understanding of traditional structures, or the assessment, reuse or adaptation of existing structures, or the development of innovative structural forms or topologies, or new types of structures, or the use of new structural materials. The applicant will also be expected to catalyse research synergies across Civil Engineering, and related disciplines.
Research Context
The Department of Engineering is one of the few truly integrated engineering departments in the world. It is also the largest department in the University of Cambridge, and this breadth and scale bring unique advantages. The current research portfolio in Civil Engineering contains many world‑class contributions to research; the successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate the potential to build on this track record.
Teaching Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be expected to provide innovative teaching in Civil Engineering, including structural analysis and design, by contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses, laboratory coursework, supervising undergraduate projects, examining, and supervising postgraduate research students. The position is based in the Engineering Department’s Civil Engineering Division, which is situated on the University’s West Cambridge Campus.
