Key responsibilities
* Deputise for the Head Greenkeeper and supervise, coach and develop the greenkeeping team.
* Plan and deliver daily and seasonal programmes (mowing, aeration, topdressing, fertiliser, pest/disease control).
* Lead in‑house course development projects — past works include UK/USGA-spec green reconstructions, bunker builds, drainage and irrigation installations, and tee constructions.

The Role
The Deputy Head Greenkeeper will support and deputise for the Head Greenkeeper in planning, directing and delivering all aspects of golf course maintenance and development to consistently high standards.
This senior role requires practical turf management expertise, staff supervision, project management experience and a strong commitment to health & safety and environmental best practice working in accordance with the Club's Golf Course Maintenance Policy, its Health and Safety Policy and the Greenkeepers Code of Conduct.
Responsibility & Duties
Operational & leadership
* Deputise for the Head Greenkeeper in their absence, making day-to-day operational decisions to maintain course presentation and playability.
* Supervise, coach and develop greenkeeping staff, apprentices and contractors; assist with toolbox talks, briefings and performance reviews.
* Plan, carry out and organise daily, weekly work programmes to deliver mowing, bunker care, irrigation, aeration, topdressing, fertiliser and pest/disease control work to agreed standards.
* Ensure high standards for all course features (greens, tees, fairways, surrounds, roughs, bunkers, tees, approaches, gardens and paths).
* Assist with course setup tasks such as changing hole positions, moving tee markers, and marking hazards and out-of-bounds areas.
* Apply fertilisers, pesticides, and herbicides following safety procedures.
* Control pests, weeds, and diseases to ensure healthy turf.
* Assist with irrigation application, maintenance and repairs, as required.
* Undertake planting, pruning, and tree work under supervision.
* Monitor and perform Clubhouse maintenance tasks as required.
Course development & project management
* Assist in delivery and planning of in-house course improvement projects (e.g. green reconstructions, bunker rebuilds, drainage and irrigation installation, tee constructions) in coordination with the Head Greenkeeper and contractors.
* Produce work specifications, supervise project teams, manage resources and ensure projects are completed on time, on budget and to specification.
Machinery, equipment & workshop
* Oversee day-to-day maintenance of the machinery fleet; coordinate servicing, repairs and pre-start checks; maintain workshop standards.
* Ensure correct storage, handling and recording of fuels, oils and consumables; report and manage equipment defects.
* Prepare and maintain machinery and tools, ensuring they are clean, safe, and in working order.
Health, safety & environment
* Promote and enforce the Club's Health & Safety Policy and Greenkeepers Code of Conduct; ensure all staff read, understand and sign relevant risk assessments.
* Oversee safe use, storage and application of pesticides, fertilisers and chemicals; ensure spraying is carried out only by certified personnel and in compliance with COSHH and manufacturer guidance.
* Support environmental initiatives and habitat management in line with Club policy and relevant environmental best practice.
* Take action to remedy any condition or damage found on the course which affects the high standard expected, or report as necessary.
Administration & compliance
* o Maintain accurate PC-based records: machinery, fuel, pesticide usage, maintenance logs and timekeeping.
* Assist with budget monitoring, materials ordering and stock control.
* Prepare reports and provide regular updates to the Head Greenkeeper and Club management.
Customer & club liaison
* Represent the greenkeeping team professionally to members, staff and visiting teams; respond to course-related enquiries and resolve issues promptly.
* Assist with course setup for competitions and events and ensure presentation standards are achieved.

Person Specification
Essential Qualities:
* NVQ level 2 & 3 Greenkeeping qualification
* Proven greenkeeping experience (minimum 3 years).
* Strong practical skills: turf care, irrigation, bunker work, machinery operation and maintenance.
* Sound knowledge of turf grass agronomy, pest/disease identification and control measures.
* Good communication and team leadership skills; reliable, organised and physically fit.
* Enthusiasm for professional development within the greenkeeping industry.
Desirable Attributes:
* PA1, PA2 and PA6 spraying certificates
* Chainsaw: Cross Cutting & Maintenance and Felling (small trees) qualifications.
* First Aid at Work qualification.
* BIGGA membership
* Full UK driving licence.
* Experience of managing on-course construction or refurbishment projects and of using industry-standard machinery & equipment.
Working Hours
* 37.5 hours per week.
* Working hours including a 30-minute unpaid break: April to September, 6:00 am – 2:30 pm; October to March, 7:00 am – 2:30 pm.
* Occasionally it will be necessary to work in addition to these hours as required by the needs of the business. Any overtime will be accrued and taken as time off in Lieu.
* Weekend overtime will be required on a rota basis, approximately every third week, with several additional shifts as required by the needs of the Club. The normal weekend shift, paid at time and a half, would be 3 hours on both Saturday and Sunday mornings starting at a time as directed by the Head Greenkeeper, to prepare the course for the days golf.
