The Advanced Clinical Endoscopist will work as an autonomous, JAG‑accredited practitioner delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred endoscopy services within the Trust. The post holder will undertake independent diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, demonstrating advanced clinical assessment, decision‑making and treatment skills across a range of gastrointestinal conditions.
In addition to clinical practice, the role provides professional leadership within the Endoscopy Unit, supporting service development, quality improvement and the maintenance of JAG accreditation standards. The post holder will work collaboratively with the Endoscopy Clinical Lead, senior nursing team, consultants and multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure safe, effective and responsive Endoscopy services that align with national standards and Trust priorities.
Main duties of the job
* Work independently as a JAG‑accredited Advanced Clinical Endoscopist, performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures with accountability for clinical decisions.
* Assess, diagnose and manage patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, including appropriate investigations and treatments such as biopsy and polypectomy.
* Deliver high‑quality, patient‑centred care, ensuring patients are informed and supported throughout their pathway.
* Maintain accurate clinical records and request appropriate investigations in line with protocols.
* Practice in line with national guidelines, KPIs and JAG standards, maintaining clinical competence.
* Provide clinical leadership, supporting and supervising staff and contributing to workforce development.
* Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team as a specialist resource.
* Contribute to service development, innovation and pathway improvement.
* Support JAG accreditation through audit, governance and quality improvement.
* Contribute to education, audit and research to support continuous improvement.
* Participate in management responsibilities, including incidents, complaints and service evaluation.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
* Registered Healthcare Professional (NMC Adult Nurse or Registered Health and Care Professions Council HCPC registrant)
* JAG Accredited Endoscopist in at least one modality
* ILS Qualification
* Relevant masters modules, e.g. HEE Clinical Endoscopist course
* Mentorship or other formal teaching qualification
* Non‑Medical Prescriber or willing to work towards this
Knowledge and Experience
* Significant experience as a Clinical Endoscopist at Band 7
* Understanding of JAG accreditation standards for endoscopy services
* Knowledge of national standards that inform practice (e.g. National Frameworks, NICE/BSG guidelines)
* Clinical decision‑making skills in GI/colorectal disease management
* Ability to demonstrate a broad clinical knowledge within Endoscopy
* Experience of managing change and developing nursing practice
* Experience in writing policies, protocols and guidance
* Experience in service development and redesign
* Evidence of involvement in the training and development of staff
Skills and Knowledge
* Competent IT skills, including spreadsheets and databases
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
* Ability to network and develop local and national links
