Join NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde as our next Director of Finance
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is seeking an exceptional, values-led individual to join our Executive Leadership Team as Director of Finance. This critical role offers the opportunity to lead the financial strategy and stewardship of one of the most complex and high-profile public sector organisations in the UK.
With an annual revenue budget of £4.65 billion and a capital spend in excess of £70 million, NHSGGC accounts for approximately a quarter of the total health spend in Scotland. We provide a full range of integrated acute hospital, primary care, community, and mental health services to a population of 1.3 million across Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Our services extend regionally to 2.2 million people and nationally through the delivery of 42 specialist services on behalf of the Scottish population.
We are a strong, values-driven organisation, and our purpose is clear: to protect and improve population health and wellbeing while delivering safe, accessible, affordable, integrated, person-centred and high-quality care.
As Director of Finance, you will lead the strategic financial direction of the organisation, ensuring financial sustainability and enabling delivery of the Board’s ambitious plans. You will oversee all financial governance, planning, risk and performance reporting, and drive the financial transformation needed to support high-quality services and long-term value for the public.
You will work closely with the Chief Executive, fellow Executive Directors, and key stakeholders across our six Health and Social Care Partnerships to ensure financial alignment with the Board’s priorities:
Better Health, Better Care, Better Value, and Better Workplace.
We are seeking candidates who share our ambition to drive change, be innovative and collaborative, and deliver continuous improvement. The successful candidate will personally lead programmes of work to achieve financial balance and enhance the Sustainability and Value Programme, exploring new ways to maximise efficiency, innovation and outcomes.
This role requires a strategically-minded and resilient leader, capable of operating with confidence and credibility in a politically complex and high-profile environment. You will be able to navigate ambiguity and inspire others through clear, compassionate, and collaborative leadership.
* A recognised professional finance qualification (e.g., CCAB, CIMA or equivalent), with significant post-qualification experience.
* Extensive Board-level leadership experience, preferably within the NHS or a comparable large-scale public or private sector organisation.
* A demonstrable track record in delivering financial improvement and transformation within a complex system.
* Strong influencing and communication skills with the ability to work across systems and build trusted partnerships.
* A commitment to public service values, population health, and system-wide impact.
The scale, profile and complexity of this role should not be underestimated. It requires an exceptional leader who can confidently engage with Ministers, senior stakeholders, clinical leaders, and local communities.
