About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity to join our vibrant team in Lowestoft as a Trainee Bookkeeper & Accounts Assistant. This is a hybrid role designed for an individual who wants to build a broad career in professional practice. You will spend approximately 50% of your time managing client records (bookkeeping) and 50% assisting with year-end accounts and basic taxation matters.
This role provides a unique path to progress from recording transactions to understanding the full "year-end" cycle for a diverse portfolio of small and medium-sized businesses and individuals.
No previous experience is necessary as we provide comprehensive one-to-one training; however, candidates must be able to clearly demonstrate strong numerical aptitude, as well as a high level of accuracy and consistency in their work. We also welcome applications from more experienced candidates who are looking to broaden their skills within a practice environment.
Key Responsibilities
Bookkeeping & Management Reporting (50%)
* Maintaining accurate financial records for a variety of clients using both cloud and software (Xero, QuickBooks Online, and Sage).
* Processing sales and purchase invoices and performing bank reconciliations.
* Assisting in the preparation of VAT returns and ensuring compliance with Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements.
* Contributing to the production of management reports to help clients understand their business performance.
Accounts & Taxation (50%)
* Assisting in the preparation of year-end financial statements for sole traders, partnerships, and small limited companies.
* Analysing client data to identify accruals, prepayments, and basic accounting adjustments.
* Liaising with clients to gather necessary information for accounts and tax queries.
* Supporting the team in preparing basic Personal Tax (Self Assessment) and Corporation Tax computations.
Requirements
* Numerical Skills: Strong numerical competency and attention to detail are essential.
* Communication: Excellent written and spoken communication skills for collaborating with the team and interacting with clients.
* Adaptability: A willingness to learn across different areas of accounting and tax.
* Tech Savvy: Proficient in Microsoft Excel and comfortable using or learning modern accounting software (Sage, QuickBooks, Xero).
* Experience: Previous experience or relevant qualifications (such as AAT) are welcome but not essential, as we provide comprehensive one-to-one training.
* Commute: Must be able to reliably commute to or relocate to Lowestoft.
Training & Career Development
The successful candidate will receive a solid grounding in both bookkeeping and preparation of accounts. While initially office-based, there will be opportunities for increased client contact, including working on-site at client premises. We are committed to professional development and will provide on-the-job training to ensure you gain a thorough working knowledge of the UK tax system and accounting standards.
For the right candidate, support for professional qualifications may be available. Any such support would be considered once the candidate has demonstrated a high level of aptitude for the work and a strong commitment to their role within the practice.
