Job overview

JOB PURPOSE: minimum of 6 months. Full time hours 37.5 based over Monday to Friday with the occasional Saturday. 0850am-16.50pm.

· To work in collaboration with a team of Podiatrists and other health care professionals, organisations and agencies to ensure seamless and high quality care for all patients.

· To monitor supervise and delegate podiatry services delivered by support staff including junior clinicians, Podiatry Assistants and to mentor students during placements.

· To undertake CLCH clinical rotations within the CLCH podiatry service and as deemed appropriate to the individual’s development and the service need.

· To liaise with and refer to the direction of Highly Specialist Clinicians when necessary and as appropriate.


Main duties of the job

· To actively participate in the CLCH Podiatry band 6 rotational programs.

· To autonomously assess and diagnose patients with a diverse range of medical and podiatric conditions, using appropriate diagnostic techniques, skills and tools. This includes sharp debridement of lesions, administration of local anaesthesia, whilst quantifying the maximum safe doses, nail surgery, and use of noxious caustics.

· To create and implement a tailored treatment and specialised care plans using a variety of appropriate treatment regimes for a range of patient groups including those in the ‘high risk’ and ‘at risk’ categories focusing on the management of primary foot pathologies.

· To undertake the following additional specialist clinics as part of CPD and a clinical rotation programme (this list is not exhaustive and may change):

1. Biomechanics clinics

2. Wound Care clinics

3. Nail Surgery clinics

· To recommend the use of a limited number of prescription medicines

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide advice and education within the multidisciplinary team by acting as a professional in your own field.

To take an active role in planning and delivering Health Promotion and training events within the Service and trust, including promoting the department’s services to other healthcare professionals and the general public to ensure appropriate patients are referred to the service.

Ensure that the condition of clinical rooms is maintained in accordance with Infection control and Podiatry Service guidelines.

To undertake clinical and managerial supervision with line managed staff

Ability to realise when a patient’s condition is out of scope of grading and would need to be referred on to a senior grade.

To have highly developed physical skills and a high level of precision

To work to agreed productivity targets as set out by the CLCH Podiatry service. All appointment slots are counted as 20 minutes (2 slots are used for a new patient and one for a follow up patient).


Person specification


Education/Qualification

* BSc Degree In Podiatric Medicine or Diploma (if qualified prior 1991)
* Evidence of continual professional and personal development
* Registration with the Health Professions Council
* Certificate in local anaesthesia
* Evidence of post grad training in specialist area of podiatry


Experience

* Post graduate clinical experience of multidisciplinary and interagency working
* Experience of working with a wide range of patient and disease / pathology types including the at-risk and high-risk foot
* Experience of working as part of a specialist team (clinical rotation experience accepted
* Experience of working in an NHS environment
* Experience of clinical supervision / mentoring
* Experience of service development


Skills and Knowledge

* Effective oral, listening and written communication in order to negotiate and persuade patients and carers compliance and commitment to their treatment and care plans
* Knowledge of treatment options and skills required in the management of High risk tissue breakdown
* Ability to undertake intricate work in using sensitive diagnostic tools and a range of surgical instruments. e.g. in the management and debridement of poor tissue viability wounds and nail surgery
* To be competent in the use of treatment and diagnostic tools (including, Doppler, scalpel techniques, syringe etc)
* Ability to manufacture simple insoles
