* Review draft contracts and prepare contract risk commentaries for all tenders, using the RCG Reserved Matters Schedule as a baseline.
* Identify contractual gaps, risks and deviations from RCG standard terms, advising on mitigation strategies, pricing implications and governance approvals.
* Support the Preconstruction Director and bid teams to ensure contractual risks are appropriately priced or managed.
* Recommend engagement of external legal advisers where contracts are particularly complex, obtaining the necessary internal approvals.
Disputes, Claims & Contentious Matters
* Support regional businesses in managing contractual claims, adjudications and other dispute resolution processes.
* Assist in the appointment and instruction of external legal advisers as required.
* Provide merits reviews, legal advice notes and risk reports to senior management.
* Attend meetings, mediations and hearings where necessary.
* Where directed, take a lead role in dispute management, agreeing and implementing resolution strategies
Governance, Reporting & Risk Management
* Support the enhancement of legal governance, policies and risk management processes across the Group.
* Ensure standard forms, subcontracts and legal notices within the Robertson Commercial Management System remain current.
* Monitor legal correspondence and advise on risk mitigation.
* Provide input to monthly and quarterly Board reporting on legal, contractual and dispute‑related risks.
* Monitor and report on legal fee expenditure across the Group.
* Contribute to GW7 “lessons learned” workshops to drive continuous improvement.
What you’ll need
* Qualified solicitor with a minimum of 3 years’ post qualification experience – Scots Law qualification essential and dual‑qualification in English Law desirable.
* Legal experience within a construction or infrastructure team
* In‑house legal experience with a construction business desirable
* Non‑contentious experience essential, additional contentious experience preferred.
* A track record of working with private and public‑sector customers.
* Wide experience of the construction marketplaces, including strategic development and dealing with customers.
* An excellent knowledge of procurement processes for infrastructure and related services.
* Experience in presenting and selling complex proposals to audiences at all levels of seniority.
