Structural Design Engineer (Connection Design Focus)
We are seeking a Structural Design Engineer with a strong bias towards connection design, specialising in steel and timber structures. This role is ideal for an engineer with proven experience delivering complex connection solutions across buildings, infrastructure, nuclear, data centres, and retail projects.
This position has been created due to continued company growth, with projects delivered across the UK and internationally, including the United States. The role offers long-term technical development within a highly specialist engineering environment.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare, review, and approve Design Briefs and Connection Method Statements, including client-facing submissions.
Produce and check structural calculations for all types of steel and timber connections, from standard to bespoke configurations.
Prepare and verify Calculation Marking Plans associated with connection and structural designs.
Undertake and review steel element analysis and structural design, where required.
Design and check temporary stability members, as required by project scope.
Generate, review, and maintain CDM Hazard Registers and Risk Assessments relevant to structural design.
Utilise and oversee industry-standard connection and structural design software, including MasterSeries, Statica, Tekla Structural Designer (TSD), and STAAD.
Ensure compliance with internal technical guidance, work instructions, Quality Management Systems, and industry standards such as NSSS.
Manage the issue, approval, and revision status of calculations throughout the project lifecycle.
Liaise with Clients' Engineers, subcontractors, and internal teams to support coordinated and efficient design delivery.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of fabricator-led design, including detailing, manufacturing, and erection processes.
Supervise, mentor, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers.
Manage team workload, scope, and progress to ensure delivery against agreed programmes.
Effectively plan and manage both personal and team time to meet project schedules.
Requirements
Qualified to HNC / HND / Degree level (or equivalent) with strong technical knowledge of the structural steel industry.
Proven experience in steelwork connection design, ranging from simple connections to complex bespoke solutions.
Strong working knowledge of Eurocodes (experience with AISC and CISC advantageous but not essential).
Competent in producing fabrication-level calculations and working closely with manufacturing teams.
Ability to work accurately and consistently under pressure to meet manufacturing and construction deadlines.
Confident acting as the technical lead and primary engineering point of contact on projects.
Demonstrates excellent engineering judgement and problem-solving capability.
Proactive, structured, and methodical approach to technical challenges.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across disciplines.
Comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously within a cross-functional environment.
Adaptable and responsive to new technologies, evolving standards, and previously unseen technical challenges.
