Job Description:
This role within the GM Motorsports Program involves developing performance metrics, conceptualizing innovative analysis methods, and implementing these techniques to enhance on-track performance. As a Senior Performance Engineer, you will focus on validating, refining, and applying new tools and methods to optimize vehicle setups for specific events and explore new directions for future vehicle development. Close collaboration with the Performance Engineering group and regular interaction with the broader GM Motorsports team and customer race teams are essential.
Responsibilities:
1. Collaborate with GM supported teams, GM engineering groups, and GM personnel to understand analysis areas for greatest benefit.
2. Answer questions across all GM Motorsports groups, building group knowledge.
3. Brainstorm new ways to achieve greater performance in targeted areas.
4. Train others in understanding models and analysis techniques.
5. Present findings and updates through reports and meetings.
6. Improve analysis methods and vehicle dynamics understanding by reimagining solutions, prototyping ideas, and validating against data.
7. Work with GM Software team to implement solutions in production tools.
8. Push the boundaries of current tools and techniques for better vehicle understanding.
9. Collaborate with core engineering and race series groups for conceptual studies.
10. Explore and implement simulation and analysis tools to improve on-track performance.
11. Clearly communicate findings and recommendations.
Qualifications:
* Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field.
* 5+ years experience in top-level motorsports series (NASCAR, IMSA, F1, IndyCar, WEC, etc.).
* Knowledge of simulation workflows, offline and DIL simulator, and vehicle performance optimization.
* Proficient in Python, MATLAB, C#, or similar languages.
* Experience analyzing on-track performance using vehicle dynamics and statistical methods.
* Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask.
* Ability to work in a dynamic environment with integrity.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Race engineering experience, including race car setup, event prep, and race strategy.
* Proficiency with motorsports data analysis software (Pi Toolbox, Atlas, Motec).
* Experience with multibody modeling (Dymola/Modelica, ADAMS).
* Knowledge of tire modeling, aerodynamic testing, and CFD application.
* Experience with vehicle testing methods and data reduction techniques.
