We have an excellent opportunity for a Revenues Officer to join our Revenues team here at Wokingham Borough Council, on a full-time, 2‑year Fixed Term Contract.
As a Revenues Officer you will assist in the maintenance of accurate tax collection records for Council Tax & Business Rates, ensuring that all tax liabilities due are correctly billed. Working with the Senior Revenues Officer, you’ll make decisions regarding discounts, reliefs, and exemptions in line with legislation and Council Policies, while ensuring all bills, reminders, and notices are issued correctly and on time.
You’ll deal with all types of enquiries from Council Taxpayers, Businesses and their representatives via telephone, email, or written correspondence and make arrangements for outstanding liabilities, including processing customer requests to set up Direct Debits. You’ll also keep up to date with relevant legislation and the software systems employed to discharge this work, assisting in the monitoring of service delivery in accordance with corporate standards.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist in the maintenance of accurate tax collection records for Council Tax & Business Rates ensuring all tax liabilities due are correctly billed.
* Make decisions in respect of discounts, reliefs and exemptions allowed in individual cases within the context of Council Tax & Business Rates legislation and Council Policies.
* Ensure that all relevant bills, reminders and other appropriate notices are correct and issued in accordance with the timescales set for the service.
* Make arrangements in respect of Council Taxpayers and Businesses and/or their representatives in respect of outstanding liabilities.
* Process customer requests to pay Council Tax/Business Rates setting up Direct Debits.
* Deal with all types of enquiries from Council Taxpayers, Businesses and/or their representatives, members or other key stakeholders.
Candidate Requirements
* Relevant qualification or equivalence experience in Council Tax and Business Rates collection.
* Previous customer service experience (minimum 6 months).
* Must possess good inter‑personal and communication skills – both written and verbal.
* Computer literate; good IT skills including office software such as Microsoft.
* Basic understanding of the principles of billing and collection for both council tax and business rates.
