Newham College London, now merged with NewVIc Sixth Form College, is the largest post-16 education provider in Newham. The Role.

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Physical Education, Fitness and Wellbeing Teacher to join our supportive and collaborative team at Newham College. The successful candidate will deliver engaging and inclusive lessons to 16–18-year-old ESOL learners, supporting students for whom English is a second language to develop physical literacy, wellbeing, confidence and positive lifelong health habits.

You will demonstrate strong classroom practice and the ability to adapt teaching strategies to meet diverse learner needs. Experience of working with ESOL learners or within inclusive educational settings is highly desirable. You will join a well-resourced department with excellent facilities, a carefully planned curriculum, and outstanding professional support.

In this role, you will be accountable for planning, delivering and assessing Physical Education, Fitness and Wellbeing provision, while contributing to students’ wider study programmes and personal development. You will work collaboratively with colleagues, support learner progression, and maintain high standards of teaching, behaviour and safeguarding.

Key responsibilities.

1. Plan, deliver and assess high-quality Physical Education, Fitness and Wellbeing sessions aligned with College standards and curriculum expectations.
2. Adapt teaching approaches to effectively support ESOL learners, using inclusive, practical and student-centred strategies.
3. Promote physical health, mental wellbeing and positive lifestyle choices through engaging and motivating lessons.
4. Use formative and summative assessment to monitor progress, provide feedback, and inform teaching practice.
5. Contribute to curriculum planning, schemes of work, and the development of learning resources.
6. Support student induction, enrichment activities and personal development initiatives.
7. Maintain accurate learner records and ensure compliance with internal and external quality assurance requirements.
8. Work collaboratively within the department to share best practice and contribute to continuous improvement.
9. Promote high standards of behaviour, attendance, safeguarding, equality, diversity and health and safety.
10. Engage positively with students, parents/carers and colleagues to support learner success and progression

Our Ideal candidate should have the following qualifications, skills and experience.

11. A recognised teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training or equivalent), or willingness to work towards one.
12. Relevant qualifications or professional experience in Physical Education, Fitness, Sport or Wellbeing.
13. Experience teaching young people aged 16–18 in a formal educational setting.
14. Experience of working with ESOL learners or adapting teaching for students with English as a second language (desirable).
15. Strong classroom management skills and the ability to motivate and engage learners.
16. A student-centred approach with a commitment to inclusive practice and learner progression.
17. The ability to work effectively as part of a team within a dynamic educational environment.
18. Competence in using digital tools and resources to support teaching, learning and assessment.
19. A clear commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity, health and safety, and continuous professional development.

Safeguarding of Children and Vulnerable Adults

In line with Keeping Children Safe in Education All employment offers are subject employment checks. These include (some of which are dependent on the role and the individual): Enhanced DBS including Children’s Barred List check, DfE teaching/management Barred List check, on-line searches, overseas criminal record check, evidence of identity and Right to Work in the UK, satisfactory references, confirmation of medical fitness, evidence of relevant qualifications and a check of previous employment history.

You will be required to become familiar with the College's policies, and comply with the requirements to safeguard and protect the welfare of children and young people and vulnerable adults. All staff are asked to complete mandatory training in relation to KCSIE and other key areas, and to read the relevant policies.
